Pertamina Trans Kontinental plants 512 coral fragments

Jakarta (ANTARA) - PT Pertamina Trans Kontinental (PTK) strengthened its marine conservation efforts in North Sulawesi waters by planting 512 coral fragments as part of its environmental program.

The program involved 26 Pertamina divers and 10 local divers, while environmental NGO SeaSoldier, local communities, environmental groups, and regional authorities also participated, PTK Acting President Director Eko Cahyadi said.

The company’s maritime operations are closely tied to the sea, making marine ecosystem conservation integral to its long-term sustainability, he said in a statement issued on Thursday.

Environmental contributions must go hand in hand with the company’s role in maintaining the reliability of Indonesia’s maritime industry, Eko said.

“As a company operating in the maritime sector, the sea is not only where PTK conducts business, but also part of life that we must protect together,” Eko added.

The coral-planting program marked Indonesia’s 81st Independence Day and involved PT Pertamina Patra Niaga, PT Pertamina International Shipping, and PTK subsidiaries Pertamina Port & Logistic, Pertamina Marine Engineering, Pertamina Marine Solutions, and Trans Yeong Marine.

PTK Vice President for Legal and Relations Amran Reza said coral planting was part of the company’s social and environmental responsibility.

Coral reefs provide habitat for thousands of marine species and support marine food chains and biodiversity. Coral reefs also protect coastlines from erosion while potentially supporting local livelihoods and economies as marine populations increase.

“Through this initiative, PTK is strengthening its role as a maritime company providing reliable services for Indonesia’s maritime industry while protecting the sea as part of Indonesia’s future,” Amran said.

The coral-planting program supports Environmental, Social and Governance principles and the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly marine ecosystem conservation, climate action, and partnerships for sustainable development.
