Young officer killed in Sydney car crash honoured at wall of remembrance

Constable Mia Lay's name has been added to the NSW Police Wall of Remembrance in the Sydney CBD as police officers killed in the line of duty are honoured.
The 20-year-old died in the early hours of last Friday morning when the police car she was travelling in crashed into a tree in Redfern while responding to reports of a car theft.
NSW Premier Chris Minns said the "tragic loss" of someone so young made today's National Police Remembrance Day particularly poignant.
"Being a police officer is one of the hardest jobs in this state," he said in a statement.
"You start a shift not knowing what you are going to face, and we ask these young men and women to put themselves in harm's way to keep the rest of us safe.
"Today is about remembering those officers we have lost, but it’s also about their families, their colleagues and everyone who continues to feel that loss."

Police officer killed in crash as a "competent", "confident", and "promising" officer who loved her job, Constable Lay's name will become the 286th addition to the wall.
The commemoration at the Domain will observe a minute's silence, with Mr Minns, NSW Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon and Police Minister Yasmin Catley all expected to place wreaths at the site.
Tributes will also be paid to Sergeant Mark Anthony Bransgrove, who died in July last year, and whose name was the 285th addition to the wall.
Sergeant Bransgrove's career extended over 38 years, with the majority of those spent working in the Forensics Services Group.
"I'm incredibly grateful to every man and woman who puts on that uniform and serves our state. We owe them an enormous debt of gratitude,"
Mr Minns said.
The first National Police Remembrance Day was held on September 29, 1989.
Ten years later in December, then-NSW premier Bob Carr unveiled the wall of remembrance at the southern side of the NSW Art Gallery.
