Ailing J. Harrison Ghee Won’t Return To ‘Oh, Mary!’ Tour; John-Andrew Morrison Will Continue In Role

J. Harrison Ghee, the Tony-winning actor who last month announced a doctor-ordered two-month medical leave from the touring production of Oh, Mary!, will not return to the show, producers announced today.

Ghee is being treated for kidney disease, and has bowed out of the tour to focus on their health with the “full support of the production.” John-Andrew Morrison will continue in the role of “Mary’s Husband” through the remainder of the tour’s first.

Ghee was initially expected to return to the tour on November 1.

When the temporary leave was announced last month, Ghee, who won a 2023 Tony Award for their performance in Some Like It Hot, said, “I’m so grateful to the producers and the entire company of Oh, Mary! for the extraordinary support, care, and understanding they’ve shown me during this time. Stepping away isn’t easy, but I know I’m doing it surrounded by people who genuinely support me, and that means more than I can say.”

Morrison, a 2022 Tony nominee for A Strange Loop, is joined on stage by Wesley Taylor, Pooya Mohseni, Michael Lepore and, in the title role, Alaska Thunderf*ck. Casting beyond the first-year anniversary date this January will be announced in the coming weeks.

The hit comedy written by Cole Escola and directed by Sam Pinkleton opened on Broadway on July 11, 2024, and continues to play at the Lyceum Theatre. Oh, Mary! is produced by Kevin McCollum & Lucas McMahon and Mike Lavoie & Carlee Briglia with Bob Boyett, The Council, Jean Doumanian Productions, Nicole Eisenberg, Jay Marcus & George Strus, Irony Point, Richard Batchelder/Bradley Reynolds, Tyler Mount/Tommy Doyle, Nelson & Tao, Palomares Miller & Rosenberg, and ShowTown Productions.
