Championship roundup: Portsmouth ride luck to beat Millwall; Norwich back to winning ways

Translate

Thomas Waddingham earned in-form Portsmouth a come-from-behind 2-1 victory against Millwall at Fratton Park. Jake Cooper’s attempted clearance ricocheted off Waddingham and into the net in the 82nd minute to settle an error-strewn contest.

Jenson Metcalfe had put the visitors ahead early on after a mistake from the Portsmouth goalkeeper, Nicolas Schmid, but it was quickly cancelled out by Lyndon Dykes’s own goal.

Waddingham’s fortunate winner means Portsmouth have won three of their last four matches while Millwall have taken just six points from their last seven games.

Patrick Bamford was injured in the act of scoring Sheffield United’s equaliser in a 1-1 draw with 10-man Derby at Bramall Lane. Bobby Clark gave the visitors a first-half lead with Bamford levelling the scores in the 79th minute, only to go off after falling awkwardly.

Norwich halted a six-match losing streak with a 3-1 comeback win at Charlton to ease pressure on their head coach, Philippe Clement. Charlie Kelman fired Charlton into an early lead, but Paris Maghoma equalised for the visitors, who then went ahead through Mathias Kvistgaarden and wrapped up victory via an Ivan Mesik own goal.

It was Chalton’s first defeat at The Valley this season and they are now without a victory in nine Championship matches.

League One roundup: Marshall sinks Foxes

Callum Marshall scored a dramatic stoppage-time winner as Luton heaped more pressure on Leicester's manager, Russell Martin, with a 2-1 victory. The 10-man Foxes appeared to have earned a point when Liam Cullen struck a brilliant equaliser five minutes after John Lundstram had seen red. But Marshall struck in the fourth minute of added time as Martin’s side suffered a fourth league defeat in 11 games. Luton had led after 39 minutes when Jordan Clark dispossessed Caleb Okoli and teed up Nakhi Wells to sweep home. The Foxes were reduced to 10 men with five minutes left when Lundstram received his second yellow card for a lunging tackle on Isaiah Jones.

Huddersfield maintained their promotion push with a 2-1 victory over rock-bottom Wigan. Ilias Bronkhorst and Derensili Sanches Fernandes were on target for the Terriers, before Christian Saydee replied late on. Huddersfield went top, ahead of Stockport, who play Notts County on Saturday afternoon. PA

On Friday, Will Lankshear scored twice as a Middlesbrough battered Bolton 5-1. Aidan Morris, in-form Lankshear and a Lewis Brunt own goal before half-time set the Teessiders on the way to a 10th successive win over their hosts in a run stretching back to 2014.

Thelonius Bair gave Steven Schumacher’s side hope in the second minute of first half stoppage-time but the former Bolton loanee Amario Cozier-Duberry, who contributed nine goals and 10 assists for the Trotters in League One last season, made the points safe after 73 minutes. Lankshear added a fifth five minutes later with his 11th league goal.

League Two roundup: Stanway the hero for Cheltenham

Show

Charlie McCann’s early strike proved enough to hand Cheltenham a 1-0 victory over Newport but they needed Wyll Stanway to pull off a fine penalty save to secure the points. The goal came after five minutes when excellent work down the right from Jake Evans saw him pull the ball back to McCann, who calmly steered his shot into the top left-hand corner of Jordan Wright’s goal.

Northampton climbed out of the relegation zone with a 2-0 victory over Colchester at Sixfields. Matty Warhurst headed the Cobblers into an early lead and it stayed that way until Sam Hoskins flicked in a smart second shortly after the break.

The win was enough to take Middlesbrough top overnight, but they will be deposed if Swansea or West Ham win on Saturday afternoon. The Swans are at ninth-placed QPR, while the Hammers – who won in south Wales last weekend – host a Southampton side who would be fourth but for their Spygate points deduction.
