'We bow our heads in memory': Herzog marks 25th anniversary of September 11 attack on Twin Towers

President Isaac Herzog marked the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attack on New York's Twin Towers with a video expressing his condolences over the tragedy on Friday.

“Twenty-five years have passed since the blue skies of the morning of 9/11, September 11, 2001, in New York were shattered by the horrific sight of the twin towers crashing to the ground," he said while standing at Jerusalem's 9/11 Living Memorial, in the video posted on X/Twitter.

"Standing at Israel's memorial to the victims of 9/11, here in the hills of Jerusalem, we bow our heads in memory of the thousands who were murdered on that dark day in New York, at the Pentagon, and in the fields of Pennsylvania."

He also praised the courage and heroism of first responders, emergency services, and New York citizens who assisted in the aftermath of the attack.

In his memorial video, Herzog also called out the continued fight against international terror, saying that "here in Israel, we understand this deadly challenge all too well.

"There is simply no justification for the targeting of innocents, whether they are American, Israeli, or any other nationality. Israel will always stand with America, our greatest ally and friend, and the most powerful nation in the world.

“May the memory of the victims of 9/11 forever be a blessing," he concluded.

Bennett, Lapid mark 9/11 anniversary

Former prime minister Naftali Bennett also marked the occasion, saying that he would never forget the image of the Twin Towers burning.

"The terrorists wanted not only to murder innocent people, but also to break America’s spirit and attack the values it represents," he wrote on X. "They failed."

He also noted the strong bond formed between Israel and the United States, saying that it was "rooted in our shared values of freedom, democracy, courage, and the sanctity of life.

"We stand shoulder to shoulder with the American people - as friends, allies, and partners in the fight against terror and the defense of freedom," he wrote.

Opposition leader Yair Lapid wrote that it had been 25 years since "the entire world changed forever."

He also wrote that everyone in Israel stood with the United States, "in remembering those we lost and in honoring the courage of those who risked their lives to save others.

"We stand together in our shared commitment to combat terrorism and to shape a free, safer and more just world."

US embassy, KKL-JNF mark 25 years since September 11 attack

On Thursday, the US embassy, Keren Kayemeth LeIsrael-Jewish National Fund (KKL-JNF) and JNF-USA came together in order to mark the 25th anniversary of the September 11 terror attack.

The event took place at Jerusalem's 9/11 Living Memorial, the only memorial site outside of the United States to bear the names of all the victims of the attack, as well as the only one outside the US to incorporate a fragment of the Twin Towers.

"Today’s memorial, at which the United States and Israel mourn together and stand together, is a testimony to our enduring solidarity and shared resolve to confront terrorism and protect innocent life – a bond that time cannot erode and terror can never sever," US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee said at the ceremony.
