Kazakh man faces trial in Bali over 2.5-kg cocaine shipment

Denpasar, Bali (ANTARA) - Kazakh national Yuriy Khalilov, 25, went on trial in Denpasar District Court on Thursday, accused of bringing 2,544.10 grams of cocaine, or more than 2.5 kilograms, into Bali.

Prosecutor I Made Dipa Umbara told a panel of judges led by Wayan Suarta that Khalilov had communicated with a man named Igor, who is now wanted by police, via Telegram starting February 27, 2026.

“The two communicated through Telegram starting February 27, 2026,” the prosecutor said.

Their communications continued until March 25, 2026.

The prosecutor said Igor offered Khalilov US$1,000 to carry a suitcase to Bali.

Khalilov was also promised a flight to Bali, a return ticket to Poland, and seven nights of accommodation at My Villa and Resort Canggu. Prosecutors said he accepted the offer.

On April 7, 2026, Igor told Khalilov that his flight from Warsaw to Bali had been purchased and provided details of his accommodation, including room 313 at My Villa and Resort Canggu.

Before traveling to Bali, Khalilov was instructed to meet Igor at a Kaufland supermarket near Warsaw Chopin Airport in Poland, prosecutors said.

The meeting took place in the supermarket parking lot at around 4:30 p.m. local time on April 9, where Igor handed Khalilov a green Boreja suitcase.

Khalilov opened the suitcase and checked its contents before placing several personal items inside, prosecutors said.

“At about 8:05 p.m. Warsaw time that day, the defendant departed for Bali aboard a Polish airline flight, numbered Y75BYZR,” the prosecutor said.

The flight transited through Istanbul, Türkiye, before continuing to Indonesia.

Khalilov arrived at the international arrivals terminal of I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport on April 10, 2026.

When completing his Customs Declaration, or BC 2.2, Khalilov allegedly did not declare narcotics among his belongings.

Customs officers at I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport conducted routine inspections of passengers and baggage using an X-ray machine.

The scan revealed a suspicious object inside the green Boreja suitcase, which bore a baggage claim tag in Khalilov’s name, numbered 0080LO248441, the prosecutor said.

Officers then searched Khalilov, his clothing, and his belongings. They found several personal items after opening the suitcase.

Their suspicions then focused on the rear wall or lining of the suitcase.

After opening the section, officers found an aluminum-foil package containing eight clear plastic bags. Each bag was wrapped in transparent tape and contained white powder.

According to the prosecution, the total net weight of the powder was 2,544.10 grams, or about 2.5 kilograms.

Khalilov faces two charges. The first accuses him of unlawfully possessing, storing, controlling, or providing more than five grams of non-plant Category I narcotics.

The charge is based on Article 609(2)(a) of Law No. 1 of 2023 on the Criminal Code, as amended by Law No. 1 of 2026 on Criminal Adjustments.

The second charge accuses Khalilov of unlawfully producing, importing, exporting, or distributing more than five grams of Category I narcotics.
