Cole Caufield scored 30 seconds into overtime Thursday night, and the record he broke belonged to Connor McDavid. The Montreal Canadiens overcame Logan Cooley's hat trick to beat the Utah Mammoth 5-4, and when it mattered most, Caufield was the one who ended it. His 15th career overtime goal made him the fastest player in NHL history to reach that mark, surpassing McDavid by 175 games. Caufield got there in 384 games; McDavid needed 559. For a franchise that owns more Stanley Cup rings than any other, this was still something they had never seen before.
Caufield Breaks McDavid's Record in 384 Games
The next-fastest active players to reach 15 overtime goals are Sebastian Aho at 645 games and Alex Ovechkin at 653 games, meaning Caufield did not edge this record. He ran away from it. These are not role players. Ovechkin is the greatest goal scorer the game has produced, and Caufield left him 269 games behind. That gap tells you everything.
The goal itself came off a two-on-one, with Nick Suzuki winning the puck, feeding Lane Hutson, who found Caufield to finish the play. Clean, quick, clinical. Exactly how Caufield operates.
The night was not supposed to go this way. Montreal had just blown a four-goal lead in the final three minutes against Winnipeg two days earlier, a collapse the NHL had literally never seen before. The Canadiens erased three separate deficits Thursday against a similarly young, talented Utah team to force overtime. There was nothing easy about it.
Head coach Martin St. Louis had a clear read on what that Tuesday disaster ended up meaning: “Maybe getting smacked in the teeth was what we needed. I loved the players' response to that game. I loved the players' response in this game.”
A Scorer Who Keeps Raising the Bar
Goaltender Jakub Dobes did not hold back after the final buzzer: “He can score everywhere. Video games, on the ice, in practice, probably somewhere else, too. He's just a goal scorer. He's unbelievable.”
Caufield now has 11 goals in 16 games this season, including three game-winners. He is the kind of player who does not need momentum to produce. He creates his own.
He leads the entire 2019 draft class with goals in 384 career games. Only Jack Hughes sits close, with 176, while Matt Boldy has 151 and Dylan Cozens 114. Montreal picked 15th that year. Few teams have been rewarded so richly for a mid-first-round selection.
St. Louis summed it up well: “It's fun to see that after the disappointment of the last game. And you know sometimes things happen for a reason.” Caufield scored. The Canadiens won. That part is becoming familiar.
