On Halloween 2026, ‘IT: Welcome to Derry’ fans were absolutely surprised when the makers released a Halloween special episode that explored the earliest origins of Derry. The standalone episode, titled ‘A Story of Derry’, takes us back centuries into the past, where the creature was confronted for the first time.

The 30-minute special introduced us to the protagonist, Neekani, whom we had previously met in the first season’s flashbacks. When she goes off into the woods with her friends to search for food, that’s when she ends up facing IT. But thankfully, she gets support, and this is where Stephen King’s connection becomes more evident.

We finally meet an important character from Stephen King’s mythos, Maturin.  It is during this meeting that Neekani learns how she and her clan can fight IT and finally imprison it for generations.

Who Is ‘IT: Welcome to Derry’s Maturin In The Stephen King Lore?

To understand Maturin’s existence, you’ll have to know about “The Prim,” which was filled with demons and all the monsters. But the nasty place happened to be home to Gan, who had access to a Macroverse that connected to our reality and all the parallel ones. The only job Gan had here was to keep the monsters inside The Prim and hold all the realities together.

And that brings us to the turtle Maturin, a cosmic being that exists in the Macroverse, which one day vomited our universe from a bellyache, creating us. Even though Maturin is a bit grumpy, unlike IT, this one comes from the light side. In Stephen King’s novel, Maturin played a crucial role by telepathically connecting with Bill Denbrough to help him fight IT.

Although Maturin’s role differs from that in the novel, both stories ultimately establish him as an opposing force against IT and as its imprisoner.

How Does The Halloween Special Explain Pennywise’s Imprisonment?

Once Maturin helps Neekani, the 30-minute special also shows us how Pennywise was ultimately trapped in Derry. As per Maturin’s instructions, Neekani learns about the cave in the Western Wood where IT’s prison crashed into the Earth and collects the scattered fragments in turtle shells to bury in specific locations throughout the forest.

These buried shells are the 13 sacred pillars that form an invisible, supernatural barrier. They prevent the IT from escaping the area; that is, Derry. It directly connects to Season 1 of ‘It: Welcome to Derry’. In the TV show, we also saw the sacred pillars that keep Pennywise trapped.
