Amy Winehouse West End Musical in Development (EXCLUSIVE)

Translate

A musical based on Amy Winehouse is officially in development, Variety has exclusively learned.

The project is in early days although legendary Broadway producer Catherine Schreiber, who has produced shows including “Cabaret,” “Rent” and the stage adaptation of “High School Musical,” is understood to be involved and casting is said to be underway.

One source described development of the musical as “the worst kept secret in theater.”

Winehouse’s father, Mitch Winehouse, who oversees the late singer’s estate, is also believed to be involved in the project, which will likely mean it involves some of her best-known songs.

Winehouse released only two studio albums before her untimely death in 2011 at the age of 27 although they generated numerous iconic tracks such as “Back to Black,” “Valerie” and “Rehab.”

It is unclear if the musical adaptation would be based on Winehouse’s life, like the biographical Tina Turner musical or more in the vein of “Mamma Mia!” which uses ABBA’s songs to accompany an original story.

The possibility of a musical about Winehouse’s life and featuring some of her best-known songs has been floated before, with Mitch reportedly discussing the prospect as far back as 2017. But with Schreiber’s involvement it looks like the project may finally come to fruition.

A biopic about the singer, “Back to Black,” was released to mixed reviews two years ago. The film starred “Industry’s” Marisa Abela as Winehouse and was directed by Sam Taylor Johnson.

Jukebox musicals have become West End staples in recent years, ranging from ABBA-inspired “Mamma Mia!” and “Tina – The Tina Turner Musical” to the more recent “MJ the Musical.”

Not every musical is a guaranteed hit, however, with the recent Chaka Khan musical “I’m Every Woman,” which opened in London earlier this year, receiving less than stellar reviews.

Reps for Schreiber and Mitch Winehouse did not respond by press time.
