DVLA generates GH¢27.14m from dealer plates between January and September 2026

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) generated approximately GH¢27.14 million in revenue from dealer plates between January and September 2026, surpassing the total recorded in each of the previous two full years.

Chief Executive Officer Julius Neequaye Kotey disclosed this at the Government Accountability Series at the Jubilee House on Monday, October 12, 2026, attributing the increase partly to reforms introduced to address revenue leakages at Ghana’s ports of entry.

He said management replaced aluminium dealer plates with tamper-proof digital stickers after identifying weaknesses in the previous distribution system.

Mr Kotey said the number of dealer plates issued at the ports rose sharply after the new stickers were introduced, helping the Authority capture more revenue.

“As of April 2025, the total number of DP plates issued at the Ports averaged between 1,800 and 1,900,” he said.

According to him, monthly issuance increased to more than 5,000 in the first month after the stickers were introduced and exceeded 15,000 by October 2025.

He said the reform ensured that vehicles received the required stickers before leaving the ports, reducing opportunities for revenue losses.

Figures presented by the DVLA chief executive show that the Authority issued 76,312 dealer plates in 2024, generating GH¢15.42 million.

In 2025, the number increased to 111,101, with revenue rising to GH¢22.44 million.

Between January and September 2026, the DVLA issued 134,361 dealer plates, generating approximately GH¢27.14 million.

The revenue for the first nine months of 2026 was therefore higher than the full-year totals recorded in both 2024 and 2025.

Mr Kotey said the improvement formed part of broader efforts to strengthen financial accountability and protect public revenue.

He also highlighted other initiatives aimed at improving vehicle identification and regulatory oversight.

These include the acquisition of vehicle diagnostic devices to help identify suspected cloned or improperly cleared vehicles and the registration of more than 7,700 excavators in collaboration with the Minerals Commission.

The measures, he said, formed part of efforts to modernise the Authority’s systems, improve compliance and strengthen enforcement.
