Finnish authorities have ordered Google (GOOGL) to halt certain preparatory work on two data center projects in the country until environmental impact assessments are completed, less than a month after the company announced a $15B investment in Finnish AI infrastructure.
The Finnish Licensing and Supervision Agency, known as LVV, issued the notice to Tuike Finland Oy, Google's Finnish subsidiary, covering planned data centers in Muhos and Kajaani.
Google did not immediately respond to Seeking Alpha's request for a comment.
The agency said the data center work must be suspended immediately and no later than Oct. 23. The order covers activities including tree removal, topsoil removal, excavation, quarrying, crushing, moving soil, ditching, and construction of roads and storage areas.
The agency said extensive preparatory work had already been carried out at the sites and could change the environment before the environmental impact assessments were completed. It said the assessments are intended to identify and evaluate significant environmental effects before major decisions and preparatory work are undertaken.
