P.V. Sindhu beat Chinese Taipei’s Chiu Pin-Chian 21-13, 21-14 to reach the women’s singles semifinals of the French Open on Friday.

Sindhu began confidently and took the opening game 21-13, keeping Chiu on the back foot for most of the game.

She carried that control into the second, waltzing to an 11-2 lead at the interval. Chiu showed semblance of a fightback, but Sindhu closed it 21-14.

Earlier, the double Olympic medallist sailed into the quarterfinals with a straight-game win over Japan’s Riko Gunji, prevailing 21-12, 21-16 in 44 minutes.

Before that, the Indian made heavy weather of beating Supanida Katethong 21-14, 8-21, 23-21. She lost 11 points in a row when two points away from victory, but prevailed in the end.
