Miti in the dark over move to scrap Bumi equity rule for tuition centres

The investment, trade and industry ministry (Miti) today said it was unaware of the education ministry’s decision to scrap the 30% Bumiputera equity ownership requirement for private education centres.
The education ministry said yesterday that it shelved the controversial prerequisite following discussions with Miti.
However, Miti said matters relating to Bumiputera equity ownership come under the purview of the Economic Planning Unit (EPU), which is under the economy ministry.
“Miti hopes this explanation clarifies the ministry’s role in this matter so that the information conveyed to the public is accurate and clear,” it said in a statement.
