Doctor Doom And Reed Richards Finally Kiss In Marvel's Mainstream Lore

Warning: SPOILERS for Doomquest #5 are ahead!Doctor Doom and Mister Fantastic kissing is now part of the official Marvel canon.

Ever since being introduced in 1962’s The Fantastic Four #5, Doctor Doom has chiefly functioned as the title superhero team’s arch-nemesis, and he especially hates its leader. Victor von Doom holds Reed Richards responsible for the accident that scarred his face when they were in college, and he consistently tries to prove himself as his stretchy rival’s intellectual superior. Even during periods when these two are reluctant allies, Doom doesn’t shy away from throwing digs at Reed.

Yet, a series of extremely unusual circumstances has resulted in Doctor Doom and Mister Fantastic locking lips. This is thanks to the Marvel Comics series Doomquest, which follows Doom being sent to different points in time against his will and possessing other people’s bodies Quantum Leap-style. The series’ latest issue sees Doom being sent back to a key moment in the Fantastic Four’s history, and unfortunately for him, it brings him closer to Mister Fantastic than he ever wanted.

Doctor Doom Kisses Reed Richards While In Sue Storm’s Body

Doomquest #5, Written By Ryan North, Art By Francesco Mobili

Mister Fantastic kissing a Doctor Doom-possessed Invisible Woman Marvel Comics

In Doomquest #5, Doom ends up in the body of Sue Storm, a.k.a. The Invisible Woman, when Galactus first attempted to consume Earth. Doom takes great joy in mastering Sue's invisibility and force field powers, and this leads to him taking point on defeating the Devourer of Worlds and the Silver Surfer, who was originally Galactus’ herald. The issue makes for an exciting recontextualization of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby’s original Galactus Trilogy.

However, arguably the issue’s most hilarious moment comes when Reed, unaware that Doom has taken control of Sue’s body, plants a huge kiss on her lips, much to his longtime rival’s shock. This happens after Reed expresses how impressed he was seeing her pull off feats like flying and redirecting light and energy, which Sue hadn’t done at this point in time. Because this is an older Doom, he knows what Sue is fully capable of and utilizes her powers as such to save the world.

Just like Doom’s actions in the previous four issues of Doomquest, it’s unclear if any of the deviations to the main Marvel timeline shown in Issue #5 will permanently stick or be completely erased. Either way, Earth-616’s Doom, much to his disgust, now knows what it’s like to kiss Reed Richards, prompting him to push the Fantastic Four leader away with an invisible force construct. He also demands that Reed to go to Latveria and “apologize to Victor von Doom for all your misdeeds.”

Soon after Doom-Sue flies away, Reed, Ben Grimm (The Thing), and Johnny Storm (The Human Torch) finally realize that Doom is in control of Sue’s body, albeit initially thinking it’s their contemporary version of the Latverian native rather than one from the future. Doom quickly defeats the less-experienced male Fantastic Four members, but is then forcibly ejected from Sue’s body. In Doomquest #6, Doctor Doom will end up in July 1969 possessing Michael Collins, who piloted the Apollo 11 command module Columbia and remained in orbit while Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walked on the Moon.

Doomquest #5 is now available from Marvel Comics.
