Could Dante Moore Skip The 2027 NFL Draft After His Season-Ending Injury?

An ambulance ride is never part of the plan. On September 26, Oregon Ducks quarterback Dante Moore took an illegal hit while sliding against the USC Trojans and left the field for a local hospital. A month later, doctors still have not cleared him. Head coach Dan Lanning confirmed Monday that Moore will not play again in 2026. The Ducks began the year ranked No. 2 and now stand at 4-3, outside the top 25. Moore, once linked to a top-five pick in the 2027 NFL Draft, now faces a long and uncertain road ahead.

Dan Lanning Pushes Back On Talk That Dante Moore Is Walking Away From The Oregon Ducks

Lanning spoke Monday, and he went straight at the idea that his quarterback is bowing out. "If it was up to Dante in any shape, way, he would be out there playing for the guys," Lanning said. "This isn't a selfish decision on Dante's part, saying, 'I don't want to come back, the season doesn't look the way I want it to look.' That's not at all what this is."

Concussion recovery usually moves in stages. A player has to pass each step without symptoms before he can think about contact, and a setback can reset the clock. The ambulance trip after the USC game showed how seriously Oregon's staff treated this injury from the first minute.

Lanning also gave a medical outlook. "We said before that this is a serious deal that he'll 100% be able to fully recover from, that hasn't changed," Lanning said. "But for him to be out there on the field for us, that's not going to happen. We'd love to have Dante out there, he's still going to be a big part of this team."

Dante Moore Could Return To The Oregon Ducks In 2027 Under The NCAA's New Five-Year Rule

Before the injury, mock drafts had Moore inside the top five, and a few boards pushed him as high as second overall. He arrived at Oregon from UCLA in 2024, so scouts have film from his Oregon seasons to study. What they lack is a healthy 2026 sample, and teams will weigh medical reports heavily this winter.

Fans reacted fast. In comments gathered by HITC, one wrote: "If you are projected to go Top-5, there's no point in returning to school." Another went for humor: "Saw his most likely destination was the Jets and was like, 'Nah, I'm good.'"

Hindsight makes for easy arguments, but the rules have shifted since last spring. Under the NCAA's new five-year rule, Moore can play college football in 2027 and enter the 2028 draft. That would give him a full, healthy year of film before teams make their picks.

For now, Moore stays with the Oregon Ducks as a teammate rather than a starter, while Lanning's team plays out a season that has drifted far from its No. 2 start.
