Volkswagen, Audi to recall almost 1 million cars in Germany

Germany auto firm Volkswagen (VW) and its daughter company Audi are to recall nearly a million vehicles in Germany due to steering problems, according to German media reports.

The KBA road traffic authority was cited by the t-online news portal as saying that the recall was required due to potential bolt failures that could damage the steering gearbox or, in some cases, cause a complete loss of steering.

The bolts are to be replaced with ones resistant to corrosion caused by humidity.

Autor Motor Sport magazine reported that VW believed the steering issue would impact only a smaller proportion of the recalled vehicles. 

The company said there were no known cases of accidents or injuries caused by the possible bolt failure.

According to KBA, the VW models Tiguan, Touran, Golf Variant, Caddy und Golf produced between September 24, 2013, and July 1, 2024, are impacted by the recall.

This is equivalent to around 900,000 vehicles in Germany and 2.16 million around the world.

For Audi, 700,000 vehicles around the world are impacted by the problem, including 58,555 in Germany.

The recall comes as VW grapples with dwindling sales in recent years, with the firm laying off tens of thousands of staff and shrinking plants in order to cut costs.
