Many people in WWE reportedly think Paul Heyman was speaking entirely in character when he made his latest claim about Brock Lesnar. They saw an advocate publicly backing his longtime client, not a serious sporting prediction. In an interview with Graham Bensinger, Heyman called Lesnar the greatest athlete on the planet and blamed diverticulitis for keeping him from doing even more in mixed martial arts. He also made a bold claim about Lesnar's UFC career, saying the champion would still hold the title today at 49 if the illness had never happened.
WWE Employees Reportedly Believed Paul Heyman Was Playing His On-Screen Character During the Interview
Heyman's remarks went well past praise for Lesnar's strength or his WWE career. He argued Lesnar never would have lost the UFC Heavyweight Championship if diverticulitis hadn't hit him. "He is the greatest athlete on the face of the planet," Heyman said. He also claimed Lesnar "would've never been defeated in UFC" without the illness, and said nobody could last with him beyond the first round. "There's nobody on this planet that could hang with him. No one," he said.
Inside the company, the claims were taken a lot less seriously. Many WWE employees reportedly saw comments as part of Heyman's on-screen persona, the same role he's had as Lesnar's advocate for years, which is making the strongest possible case for his client.
Lesnar's UFC run did include losses. After leaving WWE following his first major run, he moved into MMA, lost his debut to Frank Mir at UFC 81, then won the Heavyweight Championship and defended title twice before diverticulitis affected his career. Cain Velasquez beat him for the belt at UFC 121, and Alistair Overeem beat him later at UFC 141.

Brock Lesnar's Final WWE Run Included Two Major Matches Against Oba Femi Before His Retirement Announcement
Lesnar's WWE career ended with a Hell in a Cell loss to Oba Femi at SummerSlam 2026, and he later announced his retirement on The Pat McAfee Show. He pushed the former NXT Champion to his limit but couldn't defeat him, and after the bout Lesnar endorsed Femi. That match was his last in WWE.
The two had history by then. Lesnar returned at SummerSlam 2025 and put together dominant performances in the months leading up to WrestleMania 42. Before the event he issued an open challenge, and Femi accepted. Femi then defeated him decisively. Lesnar left his gloves and boots in the ring after the loss, which appeared to signal his retirement, but he came back later and attacked Femi. Clash in Italy was where Lesnar got his win over Femi.
