The Sonic the Hedgehog franchise opened an official Discord server where fans can "chill and chat all things Sonic the Hedgehog" on Monday.

The server features 13 different channels, including Rules, Announcements, News, Socials, General, Games, Movies, IDW-Comics, Off-Topic, Game-Announcements, CrossWorlds-General, and Clips-and-Highlights. One day after its announcement, the server garnered nearly 100,000 members.

However, several users reported on social media about being banned from the server. The server's Launch Day Update Q&A page posted the question, “My friend was incorrectly banned. Can we get their permissions restored?” and the staff's response:

We've seen reports of a number of users that may have been accidentally banned by the auto-mod. Worry not - we'll be reviewing these as things calm down!

The Q&A also acknowledged that the "auto-filter is pretty aggressive right now and will remove all caps posts, but in the future we'll be able to scale this back. Same goes for specific words or phrases that might be innocent but are getting accidentally flagged currently; we'll continue to iron these out."

As of press time, the server is currently limiting posters to users who have verified their identity.

The news outlet Kotaku noted social media posts with screen captures of questionable material reportedly posted on the server, including those mentioning grooming. ANN confirmed one instance of a server user posting, "Good lord the grooming that'll happen here” the user wrote.

ANN has also confirmed the use of internet slang term “e-kitten” (often shortened to ekitten) has been used on the Sonic the Hedgehog Discord server. One user specifically said, “tryna get sum ekittens cuz im bored” when responding to a question about why people are joining the server.

The server's Movies channel has a user purporting to be Acolade's 1990s rival video game mascot Bubsy Bobcat. However, rather than being combative with the other users, the self-described "Bubsy Bobcat's" comments are relatively benign. In what could be considered the rudest comment, the user said, “Wow so rude! Why is this blue rat getting so close to me! Keep away from the fur buddy!” following a GIF image of Sonic running towards the camera.

The Sonic the Hedgehog video game franchise launched on the Sega Genesis console in 1991. It has since seen numerous titles across several generations of consoles, and the most recent title is 2025's Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds. The games have also spawned several animated TV series and a live-action film series.
