BANGKOK — 5 OCtober2026, More than 20 otters have been spotted swimming and catching fish in Bangkok Noi Canal near Bang Khu Wiang in Nonthaburi, surprising local residents who say they have never seen so many in the area.

The otters were spotted on 5 October 2026 in Moo 7, Bang Krang subdistrict, Mueang Nonthaburi district. Both large and small otters were seen swimming in the canal and hunting for fish.

Residents living along the canal said the sighting was particularly unusual because some have lived in the area for more than 40 years without ever seeing such a large group of otters.

One resident said the otters appeared at around 15:00. About two years ago, residents had spotted three or four otters in the area, but this time more than 20 were seen.

The resident said the otters have appeared more frequently when water from upstream flows into the area. Locals believe they may have come from elsewhere with the water, although this has not been confirmed.

The otters were observed forming two separate groups on opposite sides of the canal. At times, members of the two groups faced each other and appeared to behave as if they were about to confront one another.

Others continued swimming and catching fish, behaving naturally as residents watched with fascination.

Otters are protected wildlife and natural predators. Their sudden appearance in such large numbers has generated considerable interest among local residents, particularly those who have lived along the canal for decades.
