Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage's Conflict Sets Up Major TBBT Villain Arc

After a brief internship at TPI, she decided she wanted to pursue journalism and graduated with a degree in International Journalism from Brunel University.
When it returns, Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage has the potential to set up one key Big Bang Theory villain story. Being its prequel and following quite neatly after Young Sheldon, First Marriage was not poised to create major plot holes, especially given its focus on Georgie, Mandy, and the McAllisters. Granted, First Marriage could easily feature Young Sheldon characters being set in Medford, but that wouldn’t have necessarily created continuity problems, as little was known about their daily lives from The Big Bang Theory.
Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage seasons 1 and 2 perfectly expanded Young Sheldon’s world, and the little that was known about Georgie’s future from The Big Bang Theory only enriched the watching experience, especially in the context of looking for the clues setting off the titular characters’ future divorce or Georgie’s Dr. Tire empire. However, one development in Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage season 2 finale can have enormous ramifications for a story in The Big Bang Theory season 11 in particular.
George Sr.’s death happening in Young Sheldon’s final season forced Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage to show the emotional fallout of the tragedy. The Big Bang Theory could only briefly mention that, as Sheldon had already moved to California when the Coopers were grieving George Sr. in Medford. Georgie revealed how bad things had really been only in The Big Bang Theory season 11, episode 23 to Sheldon, bringing the two brothers closer as a result. However, Mary and Georgie’s big fight in Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage season 3 can taint that moment because of what Georgie left unsaid.
Georgie & Mary's First Marriage Fight Makes Him A Liar In The Big Bang Theory
The conflict between Georgie and Mary that started in season 2’s finale is set to be a key story in Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage season 3. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage showrunner Steve Holland confirmed that Mary and Fred Fagenbacher’s relationship will continue to create conflict, and Georgie will be extremely negatively affected by it as a result, to the point that he will try to make good on his threat not to let Mary see CeeCee.
Holland further explaining that Mary choosing Fred as the first person to date after George Sr.’s death is the “messiest version” of the story hints at the arc being a substantial one going into First Marriage season 3. However, if Mary and Fred’s relationship is to be so impactful, it also drastically changes the aftermath of George Sr.’s death as Georgie described it to Sheldon in The Big Bang Theory season 11, episode 23. Avoiding telling Sheldon about Fagenbacher, which Georgie couldn’t have, as it hadn’t happened in The Big Bang Theory, makes him even more of a villain.
Through Sheldon’s words, The Big Bang Theory didn’t present Georgie as a positive figure, something that Young Sheldon had already played down. However, Georgie and Sheldon’s heart-to-heart bettered their relationship in The Big Bang Theory. Choosing to conceal the massive rift between Georgie and Mary would retroactively make Georgie’s confession to Sheldon somewhat manipulative, painting himself as the one who sacrificed the most only to get Sheldon’s apology, when the reality was more nuanced. After all, if Mary and Georgie’s fight about Fagenbacher is to be such a big First Marriage season 3 story, Georgie would hurt Mary greatly.
How Mary & Fred's Relationship Can Redeem Mary (& Condemn Georgie)
The reason Steve Holland provided for pursuing Mary and Fred Fagenbacher’s relationship is entirely valid. Beyond the high potential for drama that Mary and Fred together create, it would also be genuinely interesting to see another layer to Fagenbacher, and their story could show a different side of Mary’s character, whom Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage often paints as a villain. Even more interestingly, Georgie being so decidedly against the relationship that he is willing to forbid CeeCee and Mary from spending time together highlights Georgie’s worst flaws.
Up until now, Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage mostly focused on Georgie’s best qualities. From his willingness to help Connor and give Audrey the benefit of the doubt to doing everything he can to support his family, Georgie is almost shown as faultless in the Young Sheldon spinoff. The same treatment isn’t given to his wife, Mandy, whose perspective is rarely analyzed in depth, despite her being just as much a protagonist as Georgie.
Georgie being unreasonable with Mary lets Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage give a more balanced portrayal of him, as his and Mary’s conflict seems to bring out the worst in him, something he refuses to acknowledge because he believes in doing so, he is protecting Mary from Fred. At the same time, Mary choosing herself despite what everyone in her family thinks would also let First Marriage depict her in a more favorable light after only portraying her as unreasonable.
Georgie could be proven right in the end if Fred’s pursuit of Mary is all a ploy to destroy Georgie and Ruben’s auto shop. Such a development wouldn’t transform Georgie into an even bigger villain on The Big Bang Theory, as his strong opposition to Fred would be just another way in which Georgie protected Mary. However, Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage season 3 having Georgie be in the wrong would arguably make a better story for everyone involved, even if it makes Georgie an even bigger villain in The Big Bang Theory.
