Heavy rain heading for Durban as Level 6 warning issued

Durban residents are being urged to prepare for a wet and potentially disruptive couple of days, with a Level 6 Impact-Based Warning for disruptive rainfall in place from Thursday.

The eThekwini Municipality has activated its Disaster Management Centre and placed Fire and Emergency Services, Metro Police and other frontline teams on high alert as the weather system moves into the region.

The warning runs from 00:00 on Thursday, 17 September, until 23:59 on Friday, 18 September 2026, covering eThekwini and surrounding parts of southern KwaZulu-Natal.

Heavy rain could bring flooding to parts of Durban

According to the municipality, the forecast conditions are being driven by a combination of weather systems, including a strong ridging high-pressure system, a coastal low-pressure system and a cut-off low over the interior.

The combination is expected to produce widespread heavy rain over the two-day period.

The main concern is the potential for flooding in vulnerable areas, including low-lying roads, bridges and residential areas.

Fast-flowing rivers and streams could also become dangerous, while heavy runoff may affect municipal infrastructure, property and livestock. Some communities could temporarily lose access if roads become flooded or damaged.

The city has said emergency teams will monitor known high-risk areas, waterways and vulnerable infrastructure, with response teams positioned around the metro.

Residents urged to take care

The municipality is advising residents to avoid unnecessary travel during periods of heavy rain, particularly when conditions deteriorate.

Durban motorists should reduce their speed, switch on their headlights and leave more space between vehicles on wet roads.

Residents should also avoid attempting to drive or walk through flooded roads, rivers, streams or drainage channels.

Even relatively shallow moving water can be dangerous and may sweep a person or vehicle away.

People living in low-lying areas and informal settlements are being encouraged to identify higher ground and possible evacuation routes before the rain arrives.

Loose outdoor items and structures should also be secured so they cannot be carried away by strong runoff or wind.

The latest warning comes shortly after severe rainfall caused localised flooding and traffic disruption in parts of eThekwini on Tuesday. The municipality said major routes affected at the time had since been cleared, while emergency services continued monitoring vulnerable areas.
