Peter Rosenberg Calls Ye ‘Weird’ for Interrupting Ceremony to Unveil Honorary Street Sign for Donda West

Peter Rosenberg’s criticism of Ye (formerly Kanye West) continued Thursday (Sept. 24) when the former Hot 97 host took issue with West’s behavior at the street renaming ceremony for the rapper’s late mother earlier this week.

During Thursday’s episode of The Ebro Laura Rosenberg Show, Rosenberg didn’t appreciate West stepping in front of Alderman Greg Mitchell and letting him know he would be the one to pull the cover off the street sign.

“Loser, sorry. Even in a moment like that, you’re just effing weird, bro. Someone else is doing the ceremony and you stop them and you’re like, ‘Yo, I’m doing it.’

A producer chimed in off-camera, disagreeing with Rosenberg’s assessment of the situation.

“I’m done playing the games,” Rosenberg added. “You guys play weirdo s–t. Shut the f–k up and watch the ceremony and clap like everybody else!”

Billboard has reached out to Ye’s rep for comment.

The ceremony was held at East 78th Street in Chicago’s South Shore neighborhood, near where West was raised; the street was renamed to Dr. Donda West Way. 

“In a normal scenario, if he didn’t have other big moments where he interrupted people, it would be cute like, ‘Yo, let me do that, bro,'” Rosenberg said. “‘That’s my mom!’ Or whatever. Or, ‘I thought that’s why you guys invited me.'”

Ye’s mother, Donda, passed away in November 2007 at 58 years old. Dr. West served as the chair of the English department and she was also a professor at Chicago State University, where she founded the Gwendolyn Brooks Center for Black Literature and Creative Writing.

The cohost made sure to add that Donda West is more than deserving of the honor. “His mom, by the way, is incredibly deserving [of] that,” he continued. “I love that she’s getting honored. She should be. She was a great lady.”

Ye didn’t speak at the ceremony, which featured appearances from longtime friends Don C, GLC, Rhymefest and Really Doe.

This is far from the first time Rosenberg has been critical of Ye. Rosenberg, who is Jewish, didn’t buy West’s 2023 apology for his repeated antisemitic remarks and string of outlandish antics.

In 2025, the 47-year-old declared that Ye had the “single biggest fall-off in the history of entertainment.” More recently, he expressed his disappointment and frustration with fans and artists supporting West at his pair of Chicago shows at Soldier Field earlier in September.
