Oscar Nominee Michael Shannon & Jason Narducy Reveal 2027 Tour Dates, Playing R.E.M. Classic ‘Document’ In Full

Hard to believe it was 15 years ago last week that R.E.M. called it a career, but fans can re-live the group’s pre-breakout fifth album played in its entirety next year.

Oscar nominee Michael Shannon, Jason Narducy and their band are hitting the road again in 2027 to track one of the revered American group’s albums all the way through for its 40th anniversary. Next year’s model is Document, which featured the breakthrough single “The One I Love” and iconoclastic classic “It’s the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine).”

Running from February 3-May 15, the 2027 jaunt spans 27 dates — five more than last year — across 23 cities. Check out the tour schedule below.

After running through Murmurs in 2023 and Fables of the Reconstruction and Lifes Rich Pageant the past two years, Shannon, Narducy and company are tackling the first R.E.M. to make the Top 10 and to be certified platinum. Along with its aforementioned two most famous cuts, Document features such often-overlooked gems as “Finest Worksong,” “Oddfellows Local 151,” “Disturbance at the Heron House” and the ever-relevant “Welcome to the Occupation” and “Exhuming McCarthy.”

The group also will perform many other R.E.M. songs, usually close to 30 each night.

“This is the album that introduced me to the band,” Shannon said of Document aka R.E.M. No. 5, which made Rolling Stone‘s 2003 list of 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. “If you had told me when I was a kid that some day Iʼd get up on stage and perform it, I wouldnʼt be able to comprehend, probably even believe, that. … Feels like it was recorded yesterday to address the calamity of tomorrow.”

Shannon has scored two Supporting Actor Oscar nominations — for 2016’s Nocturnal Animals and 2008’s Revolutionary Road — and a 2023 Emmy nom for his lead role as George Jones in George & Tammy. He also won a pair of Actor Awards (then SAG Awards) for HBO’s Boardwalk Empire. His acting chops are on display when he inhabits R.E.M. frontman Michael Stipe onstage, replicating his singular voice and captivating mannerisms and quirks.

Narducy has played with such acts as Bob Mould, Supoerchunk and Sunny Day Real Estate. They’ll be joined on tour by Jon Wurster (drums), John Stirratt (bass), Dag Juhlin (guitar) and Vijay Tellis-Nayak (keyboards).

The 2026 tour saw Stipe sing with Shannon and Narducy’s group in Brooklyn and guitarist Peter Buck and bassist Mike Mills join for two shows in R.E.M.’s hometown of Athens, GA.
