Ramon: Fabregas trying to improve Serie A, Como ‘changed my mindset’

Como defender Jacobo Ramon insists that his coach, Cesc Fabregas, is trying to ‘promote the Serie A movement’ and is pleased to have joined the Azzurri last year: ‘I had to step out of my comfort zone.’

Como defender Ramon is currently on international duty with the U21 Spain national team, and he gave an interview to Gazzetta dello Sport.

The first question was about the new style of play in Italy’s top flight, strictly tied to new referee guidelines. Serie A is the only league among Europe’s top five to be without a 0-0 draw in the opening five rounds.

“The new rules have vastly improved the game; they’re excellent for football because they make it far more dynamic,” Ramon confirmed.

“We get much more tired, but it’s positive for the fans: there haven’t been any goalless draws; there are more goals; the football is more attacking, more spectacular and more entertaining.

“For instance, last season we kept many clean sheets, but this season we haven’t managed that yet, because the game is so much more open.”

Como suffered their first defeat of the season right before the break, losing 2-0 away at Frosinone.

“They’re a very intense team. The coach had told us it would be one of the five toughest away games we’d face, and he was right,” Ramon said.

“We weren’t at our usual level of focus and intensity, and they punished us: they have quality wingers and a superb striker. And then their goalkeeper saved everything! It was a good match to watch and our first defeat, but it doesn’t matter; we still have a long way to go.”

The Spanish centre-back joined Como from Real Madrid in 2025 and has quickly become a starter under Fabregas.

“It changed my mindset. I had always lived here in Madrid at home with my parents; I had to step out of my comfort zone, and it did me good. I’ve matured and changed some aspects of my routine. I’m doing very well,” he said.

“In La Liga, there are many quality teams, but ultimately the title is contested by Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Atletico. In Italy, six or seven teams are battling for the title – let’s say eight including Como – and I think many points will be dropped along the way.”

Ramon feels Inter remain the team to beat in Serie A this season.

“They won comfortably a year ago; they’ve strengthened well and started on the right foot. But we’ll try to make things difficult for them,” he said.

After the break, Como will host Roma.

“A ‘partidazo’. Roma are very strong and will fight for the league title,” the defender said.

Some in the Italian media have described Fabregas as a disruptive force in Serie A, but Ramon doesn’t agree.

“I wouldn’t say so. It’s clear you can’t please everyone; that’s just life,” he said.

“Cesc loves Italy very much and greatly admires Italian football. What he’s trying to do is promote the Serie A movement, to encourage a more eye-catching, beautiful-to-watch style of football.

“By doing things differently, he’s trying to open up Italian football so that as many people as possible can see it. Roma against Inter was a magnificent match; that’s the path to follow.”

The criticism for Como is that they don’t have enough Italian players.

“I don’t pick the squad, but this year there are more,” Ramon said.

“Ricci and Kean have arrived; they are in the national team. Liberali is with the Under-21s… Little by little, their numbers will increase.”

Real Madrid retain an option to re-buy both Ramon and his Como teammate Nico Paz.

“I’ll only say one thing, which is an absolute certainty: I’m very happy at Como,” Ramon concluded.

“We’ve only just started the season, and I’m not thinking about anything else. We need to have a great season, nothing more.”
