There’s more where that came from. Kacey Musgraves released the album Middle of Nowhere in May, but she already has more music in the works. The Grammy winner announced on Thursday (Oct. 22) that she will release Middle of Nowhere Vol. 2: Tex Mex Tapes on Jan. 15 on Lost Highway Records.

On Thursday night, she’ll give fans an early look at the project with the release of two songs, “Weekend in Texas,” and “Mi Tesoro.”

The upcoming 16-song album features 11 new songs and five covers. It continues with its predecessor’s themes of solitude, contentment and self-assurance, while more deeply exploring the musical ties between Texas and Mexico. Four songs on the new album are sung entirely in Spanish, including a new version of “Uncertain, TX,” featuring Tejano/norteño group Intocable. The upcoming album also includes a cover of Freddy Fender’s signature 1974 hit “Before the Next Teardrop Falls.”

On Middle of Nowhere, Musgraves wrapped some songs in elements of Tejano, norteño and cumbia, but that influence also stretches back at least to her cover of the Spanish-language folk standard “Gracias a la Vida” on her 2021 album, Star-Crossed, while Musgraves has also covered some of the late Tejano legend Selena Quintanilla’s songs in concert and teamed up with Carín León on the song “Lost In Translation.”

Musgraves is also a leading contender in the upcoming CMA Awards in November, as she is nominated for five trophies in categories including female vocalist of the year, album of the year (Middle of Nowhere), song of the year and music video of the year (both for “Dry Spell”), and musical event of the year (“Horses and Divorces” with Miranda Lambert). The CMA Awards are set for Nov. 18, and will air live from Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena on ABC and Disney+.
