[UPDATED] Three killed, nine injured in crash involving 15 vehicles

IPOH: Three motorcyclists were killed while nine others were injured in a crash involving 12 motorcycles and three cars along Jalan Jelapang-Ampang here early today.

District police chief Assistant Commissioner Muhammad Najib Hamzah said police received information about the incident from members of the public about 3.35am.

He said preliminary investigations showed that all 15 vehicles were travelling from Meru towards Tambun before being involved in the crash at the location.

"Two motorcyclists, aged 19 and 20, were pronounced dead at the scene.

"Nine other motorcyclists, aged between 19 and 25, who were injured were taken to Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital for treatment," he said in a statement today.

He said another 19-year-old male teenager was pronounced dead while receiving treatment at the Red Zone of the hospital's Emergency and Trauma Department.

"This brings the total number of fatalities to three. The three car drivers involved did not suffer any injuries," he said.

The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, with police conducting investigations to determine the cause and exact sequence of events.

"Anyone with information is urged to assist investigations by contacting the Ipoh district police headquarters Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division," he said.
