[UPDATED]: No 1MDB-like breaches in GLICs, GLCs so far — Anwar

Translate

KUALA LUMPUR: The government has found no governance breaches in government-linked investment companies (GLICs) and government-linked companies (GLCs) comparable to those in 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB), Felda and Tabung Haji.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said no similar violations had been identified so far.

"So far, we have not identified any violations like those we inherited in the companies I mentioned earlier (1MDB, TH, Felda).

"God willing, we can keep this under control, although it is not easy," he told the Dewan Rakyat during the Prime Minister's Question Time.

Anwar was responding to a supplementary question from Syahredzan Johan (PH-Bangi) on measures to strengthen corporate governance in GLICs, GLCs and statutory bodies to prevent a recurrence of cases such as 1MDB and Tabung Haji.

Anwar said past cases had exposed both strengths and weaknesses in governance, as documented in reports by royal commissions of inquiry, task forces and white papers concerning 1MDB, Felda and TH.

As such, he said the proposed Government-Owned Entities Bill would establish clearer rules and legal provisions to strengthen governance in GLICs, GLCs and statutory bodies.

"The Government-Owned Entities Bill sets out strict rules for GLICs and GLCs.

"However, governance must be strengthened, limits on authority, and those appointed to leadership positions must be held more accountable and must not treat these entities as their personal or family property," he said.
