Claudia Winkleman reveals Celebrity Traitors bosses have banned her from wearing 'jangly jewellery' and 'noisy fabric' in case it gives the game away

BBC Bosses have revealed that host Claudia Winkleman is banned from wearing jewellery during one of the most tense moments of The Traitors - because even the tiniest jangle could give the game away.

The presenter’s outfits have become almost as talked-about as the twists and betrayals on the hit show.

But when it comes to the all-important Traitors selection in the first episode, there are some very strict rules - and jewellery is firmly off limits.

Executive producer Sarah Fay lifted the lid on Ms Winkleman’s wardrobe restrictions while speaking to her at a press screening of the second series of Celebrity Traitors.

She said: ‘You're not allowed jewellery, though, are you, when we do the Traitors pick. We are very strict on that in case it jangles!’

Ms Winkleman, 53, admitted she is equally cautious about the noise her clothes make, saying there are certain fabrics she avoids because she fears they could give her away.

‘Yes, and there's some fabric that I think are noisy, even though I've been told fabric does not make a noise,’ she said.

And it’s not just her clothes she has to think about.

‘I would like to do a more attractive sort of [shoe], but I'm too scared,’ Ms Winkleman added. ‘Sometimes I just want to wear a flat, but I can't. I have to do spiky, noisy, scary shoes.’

Her footwear has become a signature part of her Traitors look.

The Saint Laurent boots Claudia wore throughout the first four civilian series cost a staggering £975.

The Theo Chelsea boots are among Claudia’s favourites, so much so that she owns them in three different versions: black smooth leather, black suede and brown suede.

Last year, Ms Winkleman said: ‘The walk around the table is very tense. I can’t tell you how many times I walk around it, but I really try to build the tension, which is hideously mean but also quite addictive.

‘I try and wear clompy footwear to add to it. It gets a bit flamenco. Alan recently said I walk around the table like a cart horse, and he’s bang on.’

As for the inspiration behind her latest Celebrity Traitors wardrobe, Ms Winkleman’s description is characteristically unconventional.

‘Human Crow meets Golf Caddy meets the Artful Dodger,’ she joked. ‘I'm pretty happy with it.’

And she certainly appears to be sticking to the brief.

In new promotional shots ahead of the launch episode, the presenter once again showcased her distinctive style, with help from her long-time stylist Sinead McKeefry.

Posing against a picturesque loch - where an explosive mission is set to take place, according to the trailer - the former Strictly Come Dancing presenter wore bold vintage tartan Vivienne Westwood trousers with a black coat from Brora, costing £545, chunky leather Dr.Martens, and her signature fingerless gloves.

Elsewhere at the press event, Ms Winkleman was asked if she would ever take part as a contestant herself.

She was quick to respond: ‘No, I'm too thick.

‘I mustn't play it in public. I must not!’

Ms Winkleman was, of course, being characteristically self-deprecating - and her academic credentials suggest she may be selling herself rather short.

She studied History of Art at Cambridge University, graduating with a 2:1.

Traitors-Mania is set to sweep Britain once again, with viewing parties being planned up and down the country ahead of the star-studded second series launch on October 1.

Celebrities including Maya Jama, Miranda Hart, James Blunt, Richard E. Grant and Ross Kemp will join host Claudia Winkleman in the Scottish Highlands for the ultimate battle of wits and nerve - all battling it out for up to £100,000 for a charity of their choice.

Last year’s launch episode attracted more than six million viewers.

And with anticipation building, fans are already making plans to watch the first episode together, with pubs, bars and private venues across Britain preparing for a night of scheming and suspicion.

In London, ticketed viewing events are being held at venues including BrewDog bars, the Fulham Pier, and the Arch Clapham, where fans can watch the drama unfold on a big screen and win prizes.

The London Art Bar is also getting in on the action, promising an evening of ‘scheming, suspense and snacks’ and encouraging guests to turn up dressed as their best Claudia Winkleman - ‘fringe, eyeliner, and all’.

Its tongue-in-cheek event description adds: ‘Whether you’re a Faithful or secretly a Traitor, one thing’s for sure: this is the event you can’t betray.’

Private viewing parties are also expected to spring up across the country as fans prepare to settle in for another season of secret alliances, dramatic reveals and ruthless betrayals.

The BBC has already begun building the hype, with a giant mural of Claudia Winkleman and this year’s celebrity cast appearing in Manchester’s Northern Quarter.

And the broadcaster is working with content creators to promote the new series.

A handful shared paid social videos across TikTok and Instagram showcasing the huge and impressive artwork plastered across the side of a building.

One influencer noted that, just like on the show, crosses will be added to the celebrity portraits after each murder or banishment.

But the promotion took an even more dramatic turn when the Kantos Chamber Choir performed the show’s iconic theme tune as cloaked figures in gold masks, known on the show as ‘Druids’, held up white memorial flowers, which were also used in the church in the trailer, bearing the words: ‘RIP VIP’.

Joining Ms Jama, Ms Hart, Blunt, Grant and Kemp in the iconic castle are Amol Rajan, Bella Ramsey, James Acaster, Jerry Hall, Joanne McNally, Joe Lycett, Julie Hesmondhalgh, King Kenny and Leigh-Anne Pinnock.

Michael Sheen, Myha'la, Professor Hannah Fry, Romesh Ranganathan, Sebastian Croft and Sharon Rooney complete the line up.

The new batch of celebrities have a lot to live up to after last year's series became a major TV talking point.

It was packed with standout personalities, from Alan Carr’s chaotic turn as a Traitor and eventual victory to Celia Imrie’s hilarious one-liners and Jonathan Ross’s memorable reactions.

And with millions expected to tune in once again on Thursday at 8pm, the battle between the Faithful and the Traitors is about to begin all over again.
