Editor's note: The below contains spoilers for the Ted Lasso Season 4 finale.
Ted Lasso Season 4 has officially rewritten Season 3's controversial conclusion, bringing Ted (Jason Sudeikis) back to AFC Richmond after he originally left his job to live closer to his son. While the Season 4 finale actually mirrors the previous ending, with Ted once again giving up his job for his family, this time it's not quite as dramatic because he's moving only a desk-length away. In the final minutes of the season, Ted steps aside so Alice (Tanya Reynolds) can be the head coach of the Lady Greyhounds. While the unexpected move will shake up the dynamic at AFC Richmond, it's the right choice for Ted.
Ted's new role also sets up an interesting story for the series going forward. While Ted Lasso hasn't received a Season 5 renewal yet, the creators have confirmed that Season 4 is the beginning of a planned three-season arc. If Ted Lasso returns, this job change will open up new story opportunities, with new challenges for the staff and a chance to develop Ted's life outside of coaching.
'Ted Lasso' Making Ted an Assistant Coach Is the Right Move
Season 4's promotion is an important step for Alice, who has grown significantly since her introduction, even recalling her previous argument about how a woman should be leading the Lady Greyhounds. However, the episode confirms that Ted doesn't actually need to step back from his position. With Roy (Brett Goldstein) accepting a job at Chelsea, Richmond's men's team needs a new coach, and Ted even tells Rebecca (Hannah Waddingham) he'd like to talk about it. By the end of the episode, however, he's listed as an assistant coach under Alice. Ted has already influenced the men's team, and taking the story back there now, when so many of the fan-favorite players have left, would feel like too much of a regression.
Not only does this make sense for Ted Lasso's current story structure, but the change sets up an interesting dynamic for Richmond's coaching staff moving forward. Ted has always been in charge, and though he doesn't generally have an ego about this kind of thing, putting Alice in charge will still be a big shift for the team. It could be interesting to see Ted and Beard (Brendan Hunt), who have an established coaching style, learning to follow Alice's lead moving forward. Changes like Ted's new role can also keep the show fresh and interesting if it continues, and this reveal sets up a brand-new dynamic for Season 5.
'Ted Lasso's Twist Prioritizes the Most Neglected Aspect of Its Main Character
Most importantly, Ted becoming an assistant coach is the best move for the character and his family. Just like in Season 3, Ted has chosen his family over his career, and while it is a less notable position, promoting Alice ahead of him and Beard will give Ted the ability to spend more time with Henry (Grant Feely). Throughout Season 4, Ted has missed out on important events like Henry's games, and this can solve the issue while giving him a relevant role in the central story.
Season 4 also serves as the perfect time for this shift, especially given the finale's emphasis on fatherhood. While Roy questions whether he will be a good father now that Keeley (Juno Temple) is pregnant, Ted exemplifies what that looks like by prioritizing his own son. Going forward, the series can even explore more of Henry's character, who, up to this point, has played a fairly minimal role despite the rumors that surrounded his Season 4 recast. It's also worth noting that Ted's most interesting storylines have little to do with work. In addition to his relationship with Henry, Season 4 quietly hints that he is ready to date again, and moving Ted out of the center of Richmond's arc frees up time to explore that if the series continues. It may seem like a huge step back, but Ted Lasso's surprising finale twist is the perfect move for the titular character.
