'There is diplomatic momentum': Ukraine's Zelenskyy says he spoke with Trump

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Sunday he had spoken with President Donald Trump, describing the conversation as "important" and saying the two agreed to meet in New York.

In a social media post, Zelenskyy said the meeting "could change a lot" and that he and Trump "got through a lot" during their discussion.

"There is diplomatic momentum," Zelenskyy wrote.

Zelenskyy's post did not indicate at what time the New York meeting might take place.

Zelenskyy also thanked Trump for the visit to Kyiv earlier this month by presidential envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, the president's son-in-law.

"We went through the key details thoroughly, and they saw the situation in Ukraine firsthand. The peace track is our number one priority," Zelenskyy said.

Zelenskyy added that there are "ideas for de-escalation steps and for addressing fundamental security issues – energy security, food security, and the protection of human life."

"We are working together with the American team and are ready to take really serious steps," Zelenskyy wrote.

Zelenskyy concluded by thanking Trump for signing the Lindsey Graham bill into law.

The bill, named after the late Republican senator and which was passed by Congress this month, imposes primary and secondary sanctions on Russia and other countries that support Russia in its invasion of Ukraine. 

"We all concur – there must be peace," Zelenskyy concluded his post, thanking "everyone who stands with Ukraine."
