Two runners died during Great North Run

Two 25-year-old men have died after collapsing during the Great North Run, the event's organiser said.

Both participants died after falling ill on the half marathon route on Sunday, which runs from Newcastle to South Shields.

The Great Run Company said both men were from the north-east of England and passed away despite the best efforts of the event's medical team.

A spokesperson said the causes of death will be determined in due course.

"We are continuing to support their families during this incredibly difficult time, and our thoughts and sympathies are with all those who loved and knew them," the spokesperson said.

The event, now in its 45th year, saw 63,000 runners take part.
