The Bureau of Consular Affairs described a "complex security environment."

Last Updated: October 19, 2026, 3:14 AM EDT

President Donald Trump announced "major combat operations" against Iran on Feb. 28, with massive joint U.S.-Israeli strikes targeting military, government and infrastructure sites.

Despite a memorandum of understanding signed by both countries in June aimed at ending the war, talks broke down and the U.S. and Iran renewed strikes, with the strategic Strait of Hormuz as the primary flashpoint.

Across the region, fighting in Yemen between the Iranian-backed Houthis and Saudi-backed Yemeni forces has intensified. The militia group also launched strikes on Saudi Arabia.

US urges Americans in Middle East to exercise 'heightened vigilance'

The Department of State’s Bureau of Consular Affairs warned Americans in the Middle East to "exercise heightened vigilance due to the complex security environment," saying Iran or its proxies could target Americans or U.S. interests "throughout the world."

"Iranian-supported Houthis have engaged in hostilities against Saudi Arabia, including attacks on civilian airports and other critical infrastructure resulting in civilian casualties and severe travel disruptions," the department said on Monday. "The hostilities have the potential to escalate rapidly beyond that immediate area."
