‘The Rookie’ Is Officially Fixing the Show’s Biggest Problem

Taylor Vollman is a contributor at Collider. She has long quipped, “T.V. is my name, TV is my game.” Fortuitous initials aside, at the heart of a tired joke is a simple truth — she has a lifelong passion for television. And along with it, an affinity for movies, music and pop culture.

In a childhood time capsule, she had listed Friends, PB&J Otter, and Days of Our Lives among her favorite shows. But her tastes have not narrowed with age. Her viewing habits span TV Land classics, network hits, buzzy reality shows and streamer critical darlings.

Hoping to merge this passion with her love of writing, Taylor earned a bachelor’s in media arts and design with a minor in film studies from James Madison University. After working in marketing for years, she wanted to sharpen her skills and went on to graduate with a master’s in journalism from Georgetown University. Taylor has since pursued entertainment writing and reporting.

The Rookie is going back to basics. The ABC series has strayed from its initial premise over its eight-season run, but a new casting announcement hints at a return to form. The procedural follows Nathan Fillion as John Nolan, the oldest rookie in the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD). But over the years, Officer Nolan has risen up the ranks to become a training officer. And with his ascension, the show has morphed from a fish-out-of-water story and exploration of reinvention to a more classic ensemble procedural. The Rookie premiered in 2018, created by Alexi Hawley, who previously worked with Fillion on Castle.

Staying true to its name, new rookies have been regularly introduced. While subsequent ones have their own backstory and motivation, they have largely been younger, single, and child-free. But Hawley is breaking that mold with Officer Nolan’s newest rookie.

Troian Bellisario Is the Newest Rookie

Troian Bellisario is joining the Mid-Wilshire Division as its newest rookie in Season 9. The 40-year-old will play Stephanie “Stevie” Monroe, “a single mom of two who’s trying to restart her life after a painful divorce,” Hawley announced during The Rookie panel at New York Comic Con. Her story harkens back to Officer Nolan, who was freshly divorced when he upended his life after being caught in a bank robbery. With a son in college, he closed his contracting business and moved from Pennsylvania to California to go through the LAPD Academy. The only time The Rookie has introduced another middle-aged rookie was Greg Grunberg’s Larry Macer, who flunked out on his first day after accidentally set off his gun indoors. It was a storyline that was mostly played for laughs. Stevie marks The Rookie’s first true attempt at returning to its initial premise, and being paired with Officer Nolan is surely no coincidence. Yes, he’s currently the only active training officer in the core cast, but his habit of trying to relate will likely revisit his own arc.

When Hawley called her a new type of character, Fillion sarcastically said, "Someone through the midpoint of their life deciding they want to be a police officer? I don’t know if it’ll work but okay.” And he’s not wrong. Hawley has continued to explore these later-in-life rookies through spinoffs, first with the short-lived The Rookie: Feds starring Niecy Nash and in the upcoming The Rookie: North, starring Jay Ellis.

While Bellisario is best known for playing Spencer Hastings in Pretty Little Liars, this isn’t her first role as a cop. She starred as Officer Traci Harmon in Prime Video’s On Call. In a role reversal, her character was a training officer.

Stevie Should Face Less of an Uphill Battle Than John Nolan

While Stevie is a few years younger than Officer Nolan was when he joined the LAPD, he likely paved an easier path for her. Officer Nolan broke through preconceived notions when he first joined the Mid-Wilshire Division, facing skepticism over his ability to perform the duties of the job at his age. Perhaps his biggest critic was Sergeant Wade Gray (Richard T. Jenkins), who explained in the pilot episode:

“I don’t like you, Officer Nolan. It’s not personal, I hate what you represent — a walking midlife crisis. You see, the LAPD isn’t a place for you to find yourself. And I believe, if you succeed, my house will be flooded with middle-aged losers looking for some kind of Eat Pray Love path to reinvention. And that will get my people killed.”

But Officer Nolan showed an aptitude for relating to people, an ability to meet the job’s physical demands, and trustworthiness that eventually led to him becoming a union rep. He has even developed a close friendship with Sergeant Gray. While Stevie may not face the same concerns over her motivation, she will be a working mom — something Officer Nolan didn’t have to balance with his son in college. But, throughout the series, most of the drama’s initial cast have coupled up, gotten married and had kids. Stevie will be walking into a workforce of working parents, making her a more relatable figure.

Bellisario’s addition comes at a pivotal time, with the long-running show in danger of becoming stale. Not only has The Rookie moved away from its initial premise of a 40-something pivoting their career into public service, but many of its characters have reached their personal and professional aspirations. By introducing a rookie that parallels Officer Nolan’s journey, The Rookie will also showcase how far Fillion’s character has come. Hawley announced at New York Comic Con that in addition to Bellisario, The West Wing and Psych alum Dulé Hill will join the long-running procedural as the new watch commander. The Rookie also stars Alyssa Diaz, Melissa O’Neil, Eric Winter, Mekia Cox, Shawn Ashmore, Jenna Dewan, Lisseth Chavez, and Deric Augustine. The Rookie is on the move, returning for Season 9 on Wednesday, January 6, 2027, at 9 p.m. EST. It will lead-in the upcoming spinoff The Rookie: North.
