Move Over GTA 6, Rockstar Sequel Rumor Has Fans In A Frenzy

Grand Theft Auto 6 will have the whole video game industry in a vice grip for the foreseeable future, as it should after being in development for as long as it has and having a colossal budget devoted to it. Even without an online component like its predecessor has enjoyed for more than a decade, Grand Theft Auto 6’s hype is sky high, and there’s nothing that could possibly clip its wings while it’s soaring this holiday season.

Still, as highly anticipated as it may be, Grand Theft Auto 6 might not be the game that Rockstar fans are clamoring for the most. Red Dead Redemption 3 would seem like the surest bet for Rockstar’s follow-up to Grand Theft Auto 6, but it’s anyone’s guess what Rockstar may or may not have planned. A sequel to L.A. Noire seems more likely with every new rumor that name-drops it, even if fans aren’t all convinced.

Per Twitter/X, a rumor has been floating about lately that suggests Rockstar may have an L.A. Noire sequel in the works. If so, the following details are also rumored:

  • Set in San Francisco
  • The story is about the Zodiac Killer (meaning the game would be set in the mid- to late-1960s)
  • Slated for a 2030 launch
  • Rockstar wants the L.A. Noire sequel to emphasize and enhance facial scanning technology

As for whether or not fans consider this rumor to hold water and this leaker to be credible, that’s a whole other question. According to user GTA 6 Countdown, this particular leak comes from someone who is apparently fairly reputable, having accurately discerned a few details about Grand Theft Auto 6 that have since turned out to be true.

However, there’s no way to tell with any certainty right now that this ‘leak’ is, in fact, a leak. Thus, copious amounts of salt should be taken regarding it. On Reddit, for example, user TroyBoiGaming amusingly and appropriately shared the ‘Press X to Doubt’ meme.

That said, even fans who are rightfully skeptical hope that it’s not a farce, as there’s a huge corner of Rockstar’s community that would be elated to hear that there’ll be an L.A. Noire 2. Users like X-force_2029 and PapaYoppa are thrilled about the idea of Rockstar doing something a bit unexpected with their next game, and also adore L.A. Noire enough to want to see a renaissance for it.

The most unrealistic part of this rumor, which could hobble the leak right here and now, is that it would supposedly be released by 2030. User mjst0324 argues that they “don’t see Rockstar suddenly rushing out a game in four years,” especially after there was a five-year span between Grand Theft Auto 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2, and it’ll be an eight-year span between Red Dead Redemption 2 and Grand Theft Auto 6.

Likewise, a San Francisco-based L.A. Noire game would obviously require that the sequel’s title be tweaked, perhaps to S.F. Noire—if Rockstar is adamant about keeping the “Noire,” at least. Above all else, maybe, the most enticing thing about the possibility of a new L.A. Noire game being in development is that Rockstar wouldn’t be pigeonholing itself to Grand Theft Auto 6 and Red Dead Redemption 3 as its sole bread and butter for upcoming titles.
