Government agency chairman arrives in court to face land deal charges

Translate

GEORGE TOWN: A government agency chairman with the title Datuk, who was arrested to assist investigations into the sale of eight plots of land below market value, arrived at the Sessions Court here today to face charges.

The chairman, who is in his 50s, entered the court complex about 8.30am.

The nature of the charges was not immediately known, although he was recently detained by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to assist investigations into alleged abuse of power.

The allegations involve the approval of the sale of eight plots of land in Seberang Prai Selatan below market value in 2015 to a company linked to an associate, resulting in an estimated loss of RM1.96 million to the state.

At the time, the chairman was arrested alongside four others, namely his brother, sister-in-law and two company directors, during MACC operations in August.

The MACC has obtained approval to charge the chairman today under Op Jurus.
