A senior police officer was sentenced to seven years and six months in prison after pleading guilty to a reduced charge over the death of a 17-year-old student in 2023.

Nazri Abdul Razak, 47, pleaded guilty to culpable homicide not amounting to murder before Ipoh High Court judge Bhupindar Singh, Kosmo reported.

The court ruled that Nazri’s sentence would run from Dec 15, 2023, the date of his arrest.

Nazri was initially charged with murder under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which carries the death penalty or 30 to 40 years in prison and 12 strokes of the cane, upon conviction.

However, Bhupindar reduced the charge to culpable homicide not amounting to murder under Section 304(b) of the same code after finding that the prosecution had established a prima facie case for the lesser offence.

Nazri, who was with the Kedah police headquarters at the time, was accused of causing the death of Form 5 student Zaharif Affendi Zamrie on Dec 15, 2023.

The incident occurred near SMK Jati in Ipoh, between 11.45am and 12.32pm.
