Minister urges youth to boost skills, adapt to shifting job market

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian Manpower Minister Yassierli has urged young people to strengthen their skills and adaptability to navigate a rapidly changing job market.

In a statement issued in Jakarta on Saturday, Yassierli said advances in artificial intelligence (AI), digitalization, the green economy, and demographic shifts are transforming both the types of jobs available and the way work is performed.

These changes require young people to develop skills that align with the evolving needs of the labor market.

“To respond to these changes, a diploma alone is not enough. We need to prepare the younger generation with relevant skills, work experience, adaptability, and eagerness to continue learning,” Yassierli said.

He said young people also need to prepare themselves through reskilling and upskilling. Enhancing their skills will not only help them adapt to changing job roles but also open opportunities to enter new fields emerging alongside technological advances.

Yassierli said the Ministry of Manpower is also working to strengthen core and integrated skills.

Core skills include technical competencies, certifications, portfolios, and practical experience. Meanwhile, integrated skills focus on the ability to combine different competencies to meet specific job requirements.

“Amid the growth of AI, human qualities such as creativity, empathy, integrity, and decision-making must continue to be strengthened. Therefore, we must learn to work alongside technology,” he said.

The minister added that adaptability must also be developed through a growth mindset, practical experience, and determination to continuously improve skills.

In this regard, the Ministry of Manpower is supporting youth skills development through vocational training centers, the National Internship Program, talent development initiatives, and competency certifications based on standards set by the National Professional Certification Agency (BNSP).
