Weak earthquake hits Kinabatangan in Sabah
A weak earthquake, measuring 3.3 on the Richter scale, hit Kuamut in Sabah at 5.32am today, according to the meteorological department (MetMalaysia).
It said the epicentre of the quake was 5.1 degrees north latitude and 116.8 degrees east longitude, at a depth of 118km, about 223km northwest of Tarakan, in North Kalimantan, Indonesia, and 32km southwest of Tongod, Sabah.
The quake did not pose any tsunami threat to Malaysia, it added.
Meanwhile, Kinabatangan fire and rescue station chief Suriyadi Drawis said a team of six firefighters conducted patrols and monitoring in Kinabatangan at 6.26am following the report of the earthquake.
He said the team inspected the Sabah Economic Development Corporation (Sedco) premises, Bukit Garam Library, Bukit Garam Point and other areas identified as being at risk.
“The inspection found no collapses or structural damage to any of the buildings checked,” he said in a statement.
He added that the team also advised local residents to remain vigilant in case of aftershocks.
