Bafana Bafana hammer Eritrea 5-0

Bafana Bafana followed up their 2-1 win over Guinea with another three points in Group D, with Relebohile Mofokeng scoring twice.

Mofokeng stole the show with two goals, while Oswin Appollis provided three assists as Bafana controlled the contest at the Al Salam Stadium.

RELEBOHILE MOFOKENG INSPIRES BAFANA BAFANA

Pitso Mosimane‘s side started brightly, with Mofokeng hitting the post in the 10th minute after an electric effort with his left foot. Eritrea threatened on the counter-attack but failed to make their early opportunities count.

South Africa suffered an early setback when midfielder Bathusi Aubaas pulled up with a muscle injury in the 11th minute. He was replaced by debutant Poggenpoel.

The breakthrough arrived in the 19th minute when Mofokeng calmly finished inside the box after a superb through ball from Appollis. Mofokeng doubled the lead just before half-time, dribbling past two Eritrean defenders before firing into the corner in the 45th minute.

Eritrea went into the break trailing 2-0, with Bafana firmly in control.

SOUTH AFRICA COMPLETE ERITREA ROUT

South Africa wasted little time extending their advantage after the restart. Appollis’ effort was spilled by the goalkeeper in the 52nd minute, allowing Sithole to arrive and tap home from inside the box.

Rayners made it 4-0 in the 63rd minute, smashing home from a tight angle after another assist from Appollis. Coach Pitso Mosimane made a triple substitution in the 73rd minute, with Rayners, Makhanya and Maseko making way for Seema, Singh and Mailula.

Eritrea pushed for a consolation goal late in the match, but goalkeeper Ronwen Williams produced two successive saves in the 85th minute to preserve Bafana’s clean sheet.

Singh then completed the scoring in the 90th minute, tapping home from close range after Appollis supplied his third assist of the evening.

The final whistle confirmed a commanding 5-0 victory for South Africa, who continued their positive start to the AFCON 2027 qualifying campaign with another impressive attacking display.
