A Nightmare On Elm Street Officially Unveils Brand-New Freddy Krueger Redesign

Introduced in Wes Craven’s 1984 classic A Nightmare on Elm Street, the burnt-skin, razor-gloved killer Freddy Krueger quickly became one of horror's most recognizable villains, standing alongside Michael Myers and Jason Voorhees as a defining face of the slasher era. What separated Freddy from his contemporaries, however, was his ability to invade dreams, turning sleep itself into something terrifying while giving the franchise nearly limitless room for surreal and elaborate deaths on screen.

Freddy's dark humor, unmistakable striped sweater and fedora, and bladed glove have haunted horror fans for decades now, with A Nightmare on Elm Street growing into a sprawling franchise with countless sequels, crossovers, television projects, and merchandise lines over the years. More than four decades after his debut, Freddy remains instantly recognizable, which makes any change to his classic appearance especially noticeable, but the horror legend is officially returning with a striking new look this Halloween season.

Freddy Krueger is officially getting a new look as part of Fortnite's massive 2026 Fortnitemares celebration. Epic Games revealed the horror icon in the event's new cinematic trailer, marking A Nightmare on Elm Street as one of several major franchises invading the game this Halloween. Freddy retains the essentials of his classic appearance, including his fedora, red-and-green striped sweater, burned face, and unmistakable bladed glove, but has been adapted to Fortnite's more stylized character design and proportions (via PS Lifestyle).

The recognizable silhouette is still there, but Freddy has been translated into a form that can run around the Battle Royale island alongside everyone from superheroes to video game characters. The result is particularly notable given how closely his appearance has traditionally been tied to Robert Englund's version of the character and the creepy practical-effect-based look established throughout the original Nightmare on Elm Street films.

Freddy won't be alone when Fortnitemares 2026 begins October 1 following the v42.30 update. Epic's trailer brings together an unusually packed horror lineup, including Freddy Fazbear, Bonnie, Chica, and other Five Nights at Freddy's characters, alongside Slender Man, Beetlejuice, and even Lady Liberty from The Purge: Election Year. Asta from Black Clover also appears in his Devil Union form, while the One Wish Willow from Obsession is briefly teased.

Fortnitemares is Fortnite's annual Halloween celebration, temporarily giving Battle Royale a more horror-oriented makeover while filling the Item Shop with themed cosmetics and crossover characters. The newly revealed characters, including Freddy, are expected to appear as purchasable outfits during the event. The v42.30 update will additionally introduce new Sprite types and variants, including Reaper, Trick or Treat, Gummy, Birthday, and Holofoil Sprites.

An official end date has not yet been announced, although Fortnitemares traditionally runs through the entirety of October and slightly into November. For Nightmare on Elm Street fans, however, Freddy is easily one of this year's biggest attractions. More than 40 years after he first terrorized Elm Street, the dream killer is being redesigned for an entirely different kind of nightmare.
