Hoggard girls tennis repeats as 8A East champions, sets up state title rematch

The Hoggard sophomore, fresh off claiming an individual state title just days earlier, knew her team would prevail.

And prevail the Vikings did.

No. 2-seeded Hoggard pushed past No. 4 Green Level 5-2 on Tuesday, Oct. 27, to claim its second straight NCHSAA 8A East dual-team regional championship.

The win sends the Vikings (18-1) to their second consecutive state championship match, setting up a rematch with the team that denied them a state title last fall: Myers Park.

For players like Roberson, who leads the team at No. 1 singles, the victory meant much more than another regional crown.

"I had no doubt," Roberson said after cruising through her singles match. "I knew we were going to do it if it was doubles or if we won it in singles."

Roberson was rock solid at No. 1 singles, winning 6-2, 6-1 as the Vikings built a 4-2 advantage heading into doubles play.

The Hoggard standout then teamed up with fellow sophomore Kenzie Le at No. 2 doubles, sweeping Green Level 8-0 to secure the fifth and deciding point of the match.

"I was really confident in doubles; I even told (Le) that we were going to be the clincher and we're gonna win," Roberson said.

Hoggard's state championship berth came just days after the program secured two individual state titles. Roberson claimed the 8A singles championship, while doubles partners Zannah Roberson and Audrey Sica also brought home a state crown.

Sica, a Division I tennis prospect committed to Navy, joined the Vikings this fall, further bolstering a team already positioned among the state's best.

"People should know how welcoming and spirited (this team) is, but also how much we fight," Sica said. "We don't give in. Myers Park better be ready."

Last weekend's success in the individual state tournament provided the perfect springboard into Tuesday's showdown with a Green Level team that entered the match 13-3.

The Gators battled through back-to-back 5-4 wins over Panther Creek in the second round and Broughton in the quarterfinals to reach the regional championship.

But against Hoggard, Green Level couldn't replicate that success.

The Vikings will face Western champion Myers Park (16-0) for the 8A state title Saturday, Oct. 31, at the Burlington Tennis Center.

It's a familiar opponent for Hoggard. The Mustangs handed the Wilmington school its only loss of 2025 in last year's 8A state championship match, denying the team its first dual-team girls tennis state title.

Now, with another shot at history and a chance to avenge last year's defeat, the Vikings are confident they can end this weekend differently.

"It's so cool, and I'm so ready to just take that revenge from last year," Roberson said of Myers Park. "It's going to be super close, but I think we can pull it out if we really stay focused."
