Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia calls for a credible and impartial selection process for the next Secretary General of the United Nations in the Security Council to ensure the new leadership will strengthen multilateralism amid global tension.
As conveyed by Indonesia's Foreign Ministry, Indonesia is closely following the selection process, especially after the conclusion of the 7th straw poll at the UN Security Council on October 30.
"Indonesia supports a credible, transparent, and impartial selection process guided by the UN Charter and a strong commitment to multilateralism," the Foreign Ministry stated in its social media, observed on Sunday.
Indonesia also viewed the recent entry of Lana Nusseibeh, nominated by the United Arab Emirates, as "part of this selection process."
The Foreign Ministry stated that the Secretary General's election "comes at a critical time for the United Nations and the world."
Indonesia believed that the UN needs leadership that brings nations together, promotes respect for international law, and advances UN reform.
Indonesia also expected the new UN leadership to amplify the voices of developing countries and deliver concrete results to all, the Foreign Ministry remarked.
The UN Secretary General's election process remains inconclusive, as the latest straw poll failed to produce clear outcomes and consensus among its member states.
According to leaked straw poll results, as reported by Xinhua, former Costa Rican vice president and Secretary General of the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) Rebeca Grynspan revealed as a frontrunner in the race, gaining 11 endorsements and 4 "discourage" votes.
Grynspan was followed by Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Grossi of Argentina, who received nine "encouraged" votes, four "discouraged" votes, and one "no opinion" mark.
Following the deadlock, Turkey officially nominated Secretary General of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) Feridun Sinirlioglu as the new UN Secretary General.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan had conveyed the nomination letter to the President of the UN General Assembly and the Chair of the UN Security Council on Friday.
Antonio Guterres, the current UN Secretary General, will end his tenure at the end of this year, with his successor commencing their tenure on January 1, 2027.
