It's Officially The Start Of A New Stephen King Era On Prime Video

Growing up around performers, storytelling was always central to Emma's life. Add in a nerdy older brother who introduced her to Marvel at far too young an age, and her love for entertainment led her to pursue a Journalism degree at Indiana University, where she discovered her passion for entertainment reporting. She spent nearly one year in Los Angeles covering industry stories and fully immersing herself in the world of entertainment media.

Mike Flanagan has spent years bringing some of horror's biggest stories to television, including The Haunting of Hill House, Midnight Mass, and The Fall of the House of Usher during his prolific run at Netflix. Now, the filmmaker is beginning his next major horror chapter on Prime Video.

Flanagan's eight-episode adaptation of King's 1974 debut novel, Carrie, premiered on Prime Video on October 7. It's Flanagan's fourth King adaptation following Gerald's Game, Doctor Sleep, and The Life of Chuck, but his first television series based on the author's work. It's also the first series released from Flanagan's new chapter at Amazon.

King's Latest Carrie Adaptation Is Already Taking Over Prime Video

In just days, the adaptation reached No. 3 on Prime Video's overall U.S. chart on October 8, behind Neagley and Now You See Me: Now You Don't. Among television shows, Carrie ranked even higher at No. 2, with only Neagley ahead of it one day after its release.

Starring Summer H. Howell as Carrie White and Samantha Sloyan as her mother, Margaret, the Prime Video horror marks the first time King's story has been adapted as a full television series. The eight-episode format gives Flanagan considerably more room than the previous movies to explore her life while bringing the story into the present day through social media and cyberbullying. The series also arrives 50 years after Brian De Palma's 1976 Carrie became the first-ever screen adaptation of King's work.

The new adaptation is also receiving strong reviews, including ScreenRant's review of Carrie, which awarded the series a 7/10. Carrie currently holds an 84% Tomatometer score from 94 critic reviews and an 86% Popcornmeter score from more than 100 audience ratings on Rotten Tomatoes.

It's Only The First Of King Adaptations In The Works For The Streamer

Carrie isn't the only Stephen King adaptation heading to Prime Video. In August 2026, the streamer officially greenlit Crouch End, a six-episode limited series based on King's 1980 short story. The supernatural thriller follows a movie star whose husband mysteriously disappears in London, prompting a police investigation. Adapted by Bodies creator Paul Tomalin and directed by Tom Shankland, the project will mark the first King adaptation produced in the United Kingdom. A premiere date has not yet been announced.

Meanwhile, Mike Flanagan continues developing another ambitious King adaptation for Amazon MGM Studios. He acquired the rights to The Dark Tower in 2022, with plans to bring the sprawling fantasy saga to television. By early 2026, Flanagan had completed the season 1 scripts, which he said King was "very happy" with. The project has faced lengthy delays because of complicated rights involving characters from King's interconnected stories.

Just days before Carrie's premiere, Flanagan told ScreenRant that work on The Dark Tower has "never stopped," calling it his "dream adaptation." He also revealed that Amazon had already identified Carrie as a priority when he moved his overall deal to the company. With Crouch End officially ordered and The Dark Tower still moving forward, Prime Video has more King adaptations planned beyond its latest streaming hit.
