Avengers: Doomsday has brought dozens of Marvel characters together for an epic multiversal event, and here's what we know about each of their roles. In typical fashion for one of these Marvel Cinematic Universe crossover movies, the massive collection of heroes and villains will see the different characters have roles of varying sizes and importance.
The Avengers: Doomsday cast list started at 27, but thanks to varying promotional materials and developments, it's now known that at least 36 different characters will be in the movie. That's still well below the character count that Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame had, yet there's still room for surprises.
Marvel Studios' marketing campaign for the Phase 6 movie has emphasized Steve Rogers (Chris Evans), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), and Doctor Doom (Robert Downey Jr.), as well as major returning teams like the X-Men and Fantastic Four. Conversely, some characters confirmed to appear haven't even really been seen.
So, now that there have been multiple Avengers: Doomsday trailers released ahead of its December 18 release, we have a fairly strong idea of how several characters factor into the movie. However, others remain bigger wildcards and mysteries.
Victor Von Doom/Doctor Doom
- Universe: Earth-828
- Team/Affiliation: Doctor Doom
Doctor Doom's story looks to be one driven by revenge. After losing his wife and child some time ago, he's coming to reshape the multiverse. Doom wants to eradicate the multiverse of those who have lived "stolen lives." Presumably, that is because he believes these stolen lives are somehow related to the losses he's endured. The trailers have shown him battling Thor and confirmed an existing relationship with the Fantastic Four, all while showing his sorcery powers at work.
Steve Rogers
- Universe: Earth-616
- Team/Affiliation: Avengers
Steve Rogers re-enters the Avengers franchise after Endgame's ending, where he's settled down with Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) and had a child. It's only sometime after starting this new life together that he's drawn back into the superhero landscape. The trailers have teased a meeting with Loki (Tom Hiddleston) and Steve eventually reuniting with Thor, where he proves he's still worthy of wielding Mjolnir.
Thor
- Universe: Earth-616
- Team/Affiliation: Avengers
Thor is positioned to be the one leading the MCU's forces against Doom and the incursions. His story will be linked to trying to keep the universe safe for his adopted daughter Love (India Rose Hemsworth) and return home to her. This will lead Thor to meet the Fantastic Four and Steve before rallying the various super teams together to take on a threat that scares him more than any before. Those fears are realized during his one-on-one duel with Doom.
Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic
- Universe: Earth-828
- Team/Affiliation: Fantastic Four
Details on what Reed Richards (Pedro Pascal) is dealing with in Doomsday are a bit slim. He has a personal history with Doctor Doom that will make him more knowledgeable about him and his motivation, leading to at least one confrontation. While it is expected Reed will play a part in solving the incursion threat, that is technically unconfirmed. What is known is that he'll travel to Earth-616, align with the Avengers, and then travel to the X-Men's universe.
Sue Storm/Invisible Woman
- Universe: Earth-828
- Team/Affiliation: Fantastic Four
Sue Storm (Vanessa Kirby) will join her husband on the trip to Earth-616. She will be the one who shares more details about Doom's history with the Fantastic Four's new allies. Sue will also join various heroes on a trip to Talokan to meet with Namor (Tenoch Huerta Mejía) and the Wakandans to recruit them to their cause, with the trailers suggesting Sue could stay in Namor's kingdom while others go elsewhere.
Johnny Storm/Human Torch
- Universe: Earth-828
- Team/Affiliation: Fantastic Four
There has not been much of Johnny Storm (Joseph Quinn) seen in Avengers: Doomsday's marketing. We know that he'll head to Earth-616 with the rest of the Fantastic Four and be part of the big meeting between the teams. Otherwise, the only glimpse of him has come as he holds his nephew close as a light reminiscent of an incursion flashes behind them. Johnny is not visibly part of other known missions, meaning his responsibility may be keeping Franklin safe.
Ben Grimm/The Thing
- Universe: Earth-828
- Team/Affiliation: Fantastic Four
After coming to Earth-616 with the Fantastic Four and meeting the Avengers, Ben Grimm (Ebon-Moss Bachrach) will become part of a different team. He'll join Sue and others on the trip to meet with the Wakandans and Talokanil, where he'll introduce himself to King M'Baku (Winston Duke). It's unclear what Ben is up to otherwise.
Franklin Richards
- Universe: Earth-828
- Team/Affiliation: Fantastic Four
After interacting with Doom in The Fantastic Four: First Steps' post-credits scene, Franklin seemed poised for a pivotal role in Avengers: Doomsday. If that is the case, it is being hidden by Marvel. He's only been seen with Johnny in one shot in the marketing materials, suggesting his role is either very small or too spoilery to highlight further.
Yelena Belova/Black Widow
- Universe: Earth-616
- Team/Affiliation: Thunderbolts/New Avengers
Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh) gets to deal with some true big potatoes stuff in Avengers: Doomsday. She'll lead the Thunderbolts/New Avengers, but she won't stay with them exclusively. Yelena has been seen on the mission to the X-Men's universe, giving her an opportunity for her first multiversal travel.
Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian
- Universe: Earth-616
- Team/Affiliation: Thunderbolts/New Avengers
Marvel hasn't given Red Guardian (David Harbour) much of any attention, making his role in Avengers: Doomsday tough to pin down. He's part of the meeting at New Avengers Tower. However, Alexei isn't part of the trips to the X-Men universe or Talokan. He must be up to something else or sit on the sidelines.
