Dan Levy Calls Out Shane Gillis’ ‘SNL’ Monologue and Says ‘More Men Need to Be Standing Up’: ‘Speechless That Something Like That Can Exist on Live National Television’

“Schitt’s Creek” star Dan Levy is calling out Shane Gillis‘ “Saturday Night Live” monologue, saying that “more men need to be standing up in opposition to it.”

Gillis, who hosted “SNL” over the weekend, has generated heated backlash for his comments about women in his opener. “I haven’t been to the gym in so long, I didn’t know women just dress like whores now?” he said. “Look, I’m sorry, there’s no other way to describe [it]. Have you seen it? I’ve seen it. You’ve seen the shorts? They’re those neon, like, artificial bait-colored [shorts], and the wrinkles go around the cheeks and all combine at the butthole. And don’t look! You’re not allowed to look.”

Levy posted an Instagram Reel on Sunday night reacting to Gillis’ monologue in disbelief. “Women wearing short shorts at the gym does not make them whores. It makes the men calling them whores misogynists,” Levy began. “There’s a difference there. By the way, I’ve seen more men’s nipples at the gym than I’ve ever seen women showing their bodies off.”

Levy continued, “But I’m speechless that something like that can exist on live national television. And to be perfectly honest, more men need to be standing up in opposition to it because it’s complacency that has created the environment in which women are sexually assaulted and it’s a ‘conversation’ as opposed to a ‘crime.'”

The Emmy-winning actor and writer, who hosted “SNL” himself in 2021, emphasized that “men need to be defending women more.”

“This is not a women’s issue, this is an everybody issue. Because the more that men objectify women in the media, the more that other men see them as objects and treat them as objects,” he concluded. “They are not objects. They are superior human beings to men, OK? And I’m sorry if this gets me in trouble with the internet, but fuck.”

Levy received plenty of celebrity support in the comments, with Elizabeth Banks writing “Nailed it” and Broadway actor Barrett Wilbert Weed commenting “I love you, Dan.”

Gillis also dropped the f-bomb during his hosting stint on Saturday, a big faux pas for live television. That and his monologue mark the latest development in the comedian’s complicated history with “SNL.” Back in 2019, he was hired as a featured player and fired days later when podcast clips resurfaced in which he made racist and homophobic comments. He later returned as a host in February 2024 and helmed the show a second time in March 2025, making Saturday’s episode his third time hosting.

Representatives for “Saturday Night Live” and Gillis did not immediately respond to Variety‘s request for comment.
