When The Rookie season 9 debuts, it will be with a new titular character. Alexi Hawley's procedural on ABC is quietly becoming a classic, as it's about to enter a new year. Similar to its release schedule from the 2025-2026 TV cycle, the Disney-owned broadcaster is saving the show for the midseason, alongside Will Trent season 5, Shifting Gears season 3, and High Potential season 3. Despite that, production for the project has already started, which means that whatever comes after Tim Bradford and Lucy Chen's abduction has already been sealed.
Beyond that, however, The Rookie is looking at a much bigger overall story. While it doesn't have the ambitious opener that its predecessor had, a lot of changes are expected at Mid-Wilshire when the new season kicks off. That includes delving deeper into the new paths of Wesley Evers and Wade Grey, as well as figuring out where exactly Bailey Nune fits into The Rookie's narrative. However, one aspect of season 9 that is underlooked is the fact that Hawley is slated to recast its titular character.
The Rookie Season 9 Will Have A New Rookie
On the heels of The Rookie season 8 finale, which saw Miles Penn completing his time in the program, ABC's premier procedural is effectively compelled to bring in a new character to inhabit the show's titular character. The project has an interesting case of evolution, considering that when it first premiered in 2018, the rookie that its title pertained to was Nathan Fillion's John Nolan, whose entry to the police force later than most functioned as the narrative's kick-off. Nearly a decade later, the character has understandably evolved, resulting in The Rookie bringing in his successors — first, it was Celina Juarez, and then Miles.
Now, ABC is set to bring in a brand new rookie to fill the spot that Miles is confirmed to vacate. While The Rookie season 8 ended without seeing the character graduate on-screen, the writing is already on the wall regarding his character. Hawley himself has confirmed that they would be introducing a new rookie, as having at least one is imperative to the show's overall theme. Additionally, he has also floated the idea that they might bring in a string of fresh ones instead, and do a rotation of them instead of committing to one.
Why Nolan Will Always Be The Rookie's Lead (Despite Not Being Its Titular Character Anymore)
The Rookie season 9 recasting its titular character doesn't mean that Nolan's place in the show will be lost. He will always be the project's main character, even as Hawley has done a great job diversifying its storytelling by introducing new plots that flesh out other characters. Like other successful procedurals, it's vital for The Rookie's long-term sustainability that it fully utilizes its ensemble. Similarly, infusing the show with fresh blood, as with the upcoming introduction of a new rookie, will set up the project for success beyond its original cast.
For now, however, expect that Nolan will continue to be an integral part of The Rookie, both personally and professionally. Impressively, starring in a network TV series hasn't hampered Fillion's other career moves beyond the series, recently starring in HBO Max's Lanterns and working on getting the Firefly revival up and running. This bodes well with him staying in the series for longer. And if there comes a time that The Rookie will have to continue without him, hopefully there will be enough interesting narrative for the show to go on even without its inaugural protagonist.
