Ween Announce Live Boxset, Boognish Provides, From 1990s “Chocolate and Cheese” Tour

Ween have announced a live boxset, Boognish Provides, containing unreleased concert recordings from the tour to support their 1994 album Chocolate and Cheese. As a preview of the collection, Ween released the 24-minute live recording of “Vallejo” captured in February 1995 at The 40 Watt in Athens, Georgia. Stream it below.

Boognish Provides comes out October 16th via Rhino Records. Two editions will be released. The most expansive edition, a 14xCD boxset, features their complete set from seven concerts that the band played from October 1994 to June 1996. A 2xLP will also be put out, which will include 19 tracks from the seven concerts. The live recordings captured Ween in transition. Chocolate and Cheese marked a turning point for Ween, as Aaron “Gene Ween” Freeman and Michael “Dean Ween” Melchiondo moved from recording at home on a four-track to a professional studio environment. The band also moved beyond playing as a duo and toured with a full band for the first time. Fans can pre-order both editions here, and they can mess around in a Ween-themed 1980s computer simulation launched in the lead up to Boognish Provides’ release.

Ween played 12 of the 16 songs from Chocolate and Cheese across the seven shows with multiple performances of “I Can’t Put My Finger On It,” “Take Me Away,” and “Spinal Meningitis (Got Me Down).” The recordings include a rare acoustic version of “Voodoo Lady” and the live debut of “A Tear for Eddie.” Ween performed material from earlier albums as well, such as “Fat Lenny,” “Doctor Rock,” and “Push Th’ Little Daisies.” Ween foreshadowed what was ahead during the shows, playing songs that would appear on their next three albums, including “Piss Up A Rope,” “The Blarney Stone,” and “Flutes of Chi.”

In 2024, Ween stepped away from touring while celebrating the 30th anniversary of Chocolate and Cheese, citing Melchiondo’s mental health.
