Championship roundup: Zemura seals Watford reprieve for Dionisi

Translate

Watford lifted the pressure on Alessio Dionisi and quelled their supporters’ rebellion against the owner, Gino Pozzo, with a deserved 2-0 win against a sluggish Charlton side.

After shipping nine goals in calamitous defeats by Burnley and Cardiff, Dionisi’s side had slumped into the bottom three and the fans had turned their anger on Pozzo. But goals from Luca Kjerrumgaard and the substitute Jordan Zemura – the Zimbabwe defender’s first for the club – extended Charlton’s worrying run to eight games without a win as the Addicks were booed off at Vicarage Road.

Despite the mood of insurrection swirling around Pozzo on social media, protests against his 14-year ownership outside the ground before kick-off were limited and Watford kept their first clean sheet in 210 days with only their second win in three months.

Jake Cooper’s scrambled equaliser rescued a point for Millwall as they came from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Lincoln. The Imps looked on course to put Wednesday’s 6-0 home thrashing against West Ham behind them in style when goals from Andrei Coubiș and Rob Street put them in a strong position after 33 minutes at the Den. There was some controversy around the second goal, though, as what looked a clear handball by Reeco Hackett in the buildup was missed by the assistant stood close by.

The Lions were able to prevent back-to-back home defeats with a much-improved second-half performance, with the visitors hanging on for a share of the spoils after having Deji Elerewe sent off soon after Cooper’s leveller. Kyrell Lisbie had scored Millwall’s first.

League One roundup: Garbett keeps Savage unbeaten

Show

Robbie Savage’s first home league game in charge of Peterborough ended in a dramatic 2-2 draw as they shared the spoils with Burton. It looked as if Gbemi Arubi’s 89th-minute wonderstrike had earned Albion their first win in three, but Matt Garbett responded with a 96th minute leveller to snatch his side a point.

Savage’s side got off to the perfect start as Owura Edwards tapped home Harry Leonard’s cross in the second minute, but the Brewers were soon level through Charlie Webster’s deflected strike.

Arubi saw an athletic effort fly wide in the second half, but was not to be denied twice as he took aim and found the target from the halfway line, only for Garbett to level with a last-gasp rebound.

Savage started his time at London Road with a 3-1 win at Leicester last Saturday.

Aaron Collins scored the winner as MK Dons beat Luton 2-1 to claim a first league victory of the season. Alex Gilbey fired the Dons ahead with a fine strike before Jordan Clark equalised for the visitors. But Collins’ penalty won the match to condemn Luton to a third defeat in their last four games. Will Lankshear stepped off the bench to inspire Middlesbrough’s stirring second-half fightback in their 2-2 draw with 10-man Cardiff at the Riverside. The Bluebirds stunned high-flying Boro in the first half and led 2-0 at the interval after goals from Jack Moylan and Ollie Tanner.

League Two roundup: Rooney and Coughlan end Fleetwood's wait

Show

Fleetwood secured a first league win in six attempts with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Rotherham at Highbury. Matt Lawlor’s side, who will host Arsenal in the Carabao Cup at the end of the month, controlled large parts of the game and were good value for all three points.

After a goalless first half, it took just over 40 seconds of the second period for the Cod Army to take the lead. A neatly worked corner routine found Finley Potter in the middle of the area and he deftly backheeled the ball into the path of Shaun Rooney (pictured), who slotted home coolly at the far post.

With 10 minutes left of normal time, Fleetwood then made sure of all three points through Ronan Coughlan’s header from Crispin McLean’s cross.

Shrewsbury beat Bristol Rovers 1-0 despite ending the game at the New Meadow with nine men. George Lloyd’s late penalty proved enough for the hosts to claim victory but they had to do it the hard way after Jay Turner-Cooke and Isaac Fletcher were sent off in the last 10 minutes.

Lankshear, the Championship’s top scorer, was surprisingly rested but the striker was brought on by Kim Hellberg at half-time, and within 16 minutes of his introduction Boro were level. Tommy Conway halved the deficit before Lankshear struck his 11th goal of the season in all competitions.

Cardiff went down to 10 men with seven minutes to play when Gabriel Osho was given a straight red card for a reckless tackle on Lankshear, but Boro – who are now unbeaten in nine league games – could not force a winner.

In the pick of the 3pm BST kick-offs, Swansea are at home to West Ham in a meeting of the teams in first and third. Birmingham, in fourth, host fifth-placed QPR, while bottom-placed Preston are at Wrexham.
