PM’s brother Idrus Ibrahim buried in Bukit Mertajam after Friday prayers

BUKIT MERTAJAM, Sept 25 — The remains of Idrus Ibrahim, the elder brother of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, were laid to rest at the Cheruk Tok Kun Bawah Muslim Cemetery here today.

The funeral was attended by hundreds of family members, relatives, friends and political leaders from various parties.

Earlier, the remains were taken from the family home at 12.20 pm in a van to the temporary prayer hall at Cheruk Tok Kun Bawah Jamek Mosque on Jalan Kolam.

The prime minister, accompanied by family members and members of the public, walked about 200 metres from the late Idrus’ home to the prayer hall.

The funeral prayers, held after Friday prayers, were led by Penang Mufti Assoc Prof Datuk Dr Mohd Sukki Othman. The remains were then taken to the cemetery and buried at 2.10 pm.

Penang Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Ramli Ngah Talib and his wife Toh Puan Raja Noora Ashikin Raja Abdullah paid their respects to the late Idrus at the family home at 11.15 am.

Also present to pay their last respects were Penang Deputy Chief Minister I Datuk Dr Mohamad Abdul Hamid; Entrepreneur and Cooperatives Development Minister and Bukit Mertajam MP Steven Sim; and political leaders from various parties.

Idrus died in his sleep at his residence at 6.10 pm yesterday. He was 83.

The former teacher is survived by his wife, four children and 10 grandchildren. — Bernama
