Translate

MTN Ghana has reported a 44.4 per cent year-on-year increase in the value of Mobile Money transactions for the first half of 2026, alongside plans to invest US$1.1 billion over three years to expand its network infrastructure and digital services across the country.

The company disclosed this at a Regional Media and Stakeholder Engagement in the Volta Region, where management outlined its financial performance, network expansion plans and digital financial services.

MTN Ghana’s General Manager for Southern Ghana, David Gyimah Boadi, said the company had earmarked approximately US$380 million for investment in 2026 as part of the three-year programme.

He said the investment was intended to improve network capacity, service quality and infrastructure resilience amid growing demand for digital services.

As part of the expansion, MTN plans to deploy 500 new network sites across Ghana in 2026, with the Volta Region among the areas expected to benefit.

The company is also upgrading existing rural network infrastructure to extend 4G connectivity to underserved communities.

The Senior Manager for Sales in the South East, Princess Owusu Nyarko, said the expansion involved identifying communities with coverage gaps, constructing new sites and upgrading existing infrastructure to improve service delivery.

She said the company was also working with technology innovators and industry partners to prepare for emerging connectivity needs.

Financial performance

MTN Ghana also reported growth in its financial performance for the first half of 2026.

Service revenue reached GH¢15 billion, representing a 32.3 per cent increase, while earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation rose by 47.1 per cent to GH¢9.3 billion.

Profit after tax increased by 46.8 per cent to GH¢5.1 billion, according to figures presented by the company.

MTN further reported that Mobile Money transaction volumes and revenue each grew by 23.3 per cent during the period, while the number of active users increased by 3.1 per cent.

The company said it was strengthening security measures and customer education to address fraud risks associated with the growing use of digital financial services.

Support for businesses

On support for businesses, MTN Ghana’s Network Manager for the South East, Duku Samuel, said the company was providing tailored products for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

These included specialised voice bundles, the SME bundle and JIMAPA, a package designed for women in business.

He said the company was also expanding fibre broadband services and digital payment solutions for businesses, households, enterprises and government agencies.

Investment in education and healthcare

Beyond telecommunications, MTN Ghana highlighted its investments in education, healthcare and digital skills development.

The company said the MTN Ghana Foundation commissioned and handed over an Accident and Emergency Centre valued at GH¢15.4 million to the Ho Teaching Hospital in March 2026.

It also reported that its Girls-in-ICT programme had trained 1,000 girls and 100 teachers in the Volta Region in basic information and communications technology (ICT), digital skills and work readiness, in collaboration with the Ministry of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation.

Nationally, the company said its Skills Academy had equipped more than 100,000 young people with digital literacy, financial skills and career-readiness competencies.

Sustainability initiatives

MTN Ghana also outlined measures under its sustainability strategy, including the use of solar power at selected network sites, waste separation, recycling and responsible water management.

The company’s Media Relations Adviser, Shiela Sorinye, said sustainability had been integrated into its Ambition 2030 strategy, with measures aimed at reducing its environmental footprint.

The company also reported paying GH¢5.6 billion in direct and indirect taxes and GH¢384.7 million in fees and levies during the first half of 2026.

MTN Ghana, which is marking 30 years of operations in the country, said it would continue investing in network expansion, digital financial services, customer experience and business solutions as part of its growth strategy.
